OCEANSIDE A county probation officer shot and killed a dog that lunged at her in an aggressive manner Wednesday night in the backyard of an Oceanside house, police said.
SNIP
The probation officer went into the backyard, where the pit bull-mix came after her, the lieutenant said. She shot the dog to protect herself, he said.

Whew! Thank goodness!
Why was she in the back yard? This smells.
Hey, that Shih Tzu was a man-killer!
PETA needs to weigh in.
Pet safety and gun control at the same time.
Perfect!
“Why was she in the back yard?”
IIRC, Probation Officers are authorized to search the person and residence of those on probation. It’s a condition of their probation.
I usually very critical of the steroid-ridden combat soldier wannabees dressed as cops, but in this case, I’m willing to cut her some slack. This kid was not to be messed with and we don’t know if he was a gang-banger that had turned a dog vicious.
That may be true, but since they were looking for a teenager, it seems very unlikely the teenager owned the home, or backyard where the dog was shot to death.
If they are worried about people knowing they are there and flushing drugs down the toilet or something, it doesn't seem to be any better to sneak into an area where probably half the homes have dogs that would bark anyway. Or going in and shooting them, letting everyone inside the police are there.
The police have policies to shoot dogs at the minimum inconvenience.
Night probation visit...backyard? The probation officer was a fool. She needs to be terminated for not utilizing common sense and about 6 months of community service at an animal shelter for killing an unarmed canine.
FYI, in MD [and other states] “assault with a deadly weapon” includes but it certainly is not limited to a pocket knife, a rock, a stick, etc.
Was he convicted of assault *and* battery or did he just ‘give an appearance of intending to do harm”, contingent upon the plaintiff’s “perception”?
“I felt threatened.”
Probation is given for minor offenses, usually for misdemeanor convictions.
Parole is a different story.
If they have “Probation Officers” with guns, it must be for a reason, even if it’s stupid. If you’re on Parole or Probation it’s some condition of court-imposed restriction. I don’t know how it works, I was only ever on PBJ for a traffic citation.
Years ago a female police officer in a small town near where I live killed a pit bull with her PR24. The owner had ordered the dog to attack her and she caught it mid-air before it got to her neck.
Technically that is not true.
Probation is usually given in lieu of a jail sentence.
Parole is an early release that is granted for good time credits earned off of a prison sentence.
But you're correct, both parole and probation "officers" carry weapons.
You’re both right.
Drunk posting carries some risk.
Every so often, I feel the need to appear to be reasonable and enlightened. It almost never works out well for me on FR.
I’m seeking treatment.
(I’m having fun with this and essentially agree with everyone about the unnecessary slaughter of dogs by the jack-booted thugs.)
All pitbulls should be shot.
ROFL!!!
