I have taken several classes in portrait drawing. It is difficult to get a likeness when you are sitting there looking at the person but try to imagine drawing what someone TELLS you the person looks like.They pull out transparencies of eyes, noses, mouths, etc.
The composite is made from pieces that match the descriptions.
Or at least at some places.
