David Shaw knows the other side of Richard Sherman

Stanford coach David Shaw has seen both sides of Richard Sherman.
And when something has two sides, there has to be an edge that separates them.
That edge, Shaw said, it what makes the Seahawks cornerback so special on the field.
Bill Walsh said you want guys with high character who are great players and great people, Shaw said, via Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News.
But every once in a while, you have to line up and defend Jerry Rice. And the guy who does that has to be on the edge. Thats where Richard is.
Weve all had ringside seats to that edge the last two days, since Shermans post-game deconstruction of 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree. But the subsequent apology (to his teammates, not specifically to Crabtree) shows the side Shaws familiar with as well.
The Stanford coach remembers how quick Sherman was to volunteer to help with a charity camp for kids with Down syndrome, and other events.
Richard was the first to raise his hand, Shaw said. He was there at the beginning, and he stayed past the end. He is the farthest thing from a thug you can imagine. Thugs dont volunteer to help out at Special Olympics when theyre in high school.

responding to comment: What kind of role model is he when kids see that disgusting behavior? That is mildly ironic, isnt it? Neither team is my team, so I can make comments without a biased perspective. Richard Sherman showed no class. I always appreciate a gracious winner, who praises his teammates for the victory. But if the person who made the above comment is from SF and is concerned about what kids see as role models, he should look at his city, the most degenerate city in the country, and think about what kids have had to endure on public display all the time. If the role model concern just arose because of Sherman, that is hypocrisy at its finest on display.
"You go girl."
I heard Erin interviewed by Dan Patrick yesterday. She loved the interview and thought it was great that someone was animated and did not just give the usual bland comments.
True enough, but watch the interview again and see how relieved she becomes when she hears the producer in her earpiece telling her to cut the interview off.
I’d like to know what Crabtree said to him immediately after he tipped the ball in to a teammates hands.
“Don’t EVER talk about me!” is not something one usually shouts at someone, unless that someone has said something to/about one.
Apparently it goes back to a camp over the summer in Arizona when this whole grudge between he two started.
Thanks.
I did not know it went back that far.
It was the NFC championship. Sherman was amped. They shoved a camera in his face right afterwards. So he did a little trash talking.... big deal. He’s a football player. He apologized afterwards. From everything I’ve read he’s a smart guy, and a good guy.
A good guy who had a bad moment. This should not define him. I say , give the guy a break. It was during an emotional event.
Is there a reason you felt a picture was relevant?
Nope. Just wanted people to know who David Shaw was.
I recall that Mike Singletary’s reputation was that he was a beast on the field and a gentleman off the field. Football is a violent, brutal sport. If you want to win, you will need some violent brutal players. I can handle the on field behavior. I draw the line at off the field behavior.
Hockey is the same way. You will never hear such a display of profanity as you hear on the ice at an NHL game. It’s the players, the coaches, and yes, even the officials.

Stanford should be ashamed.
uh huh. Sure.
Richard Sherman is a thug. Part of the 12 thugs from Seattle.
I read on a couple sports blogs the rumor of why Sherman has a big problem with Crabtree is because, instead of shaking Sherman’s hand at a Larry Fitzgerald charity event last year, Crabtree tried to start a fight.
Who are the 12? I am not that familiar with all their players.
