North Carolina elementary school rewards black student with Confederate hat
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS ^ | Monday, January 20, 2014, | By Nina Golgowski

The 9-year-old boy's outraged mother said she's unable to grasp how her son's school thought it was appropriate to send him home with the hat on his head. 'This stands for a dark time in our history,' Natasha Lea told MyFox8 in tears. A North Carolina mother is reeling after an elementary school rewarded her black son with a Confederate Army hat.

When Natasha Lea's 9-year-old son Jacob got off his Reidsville school bus last week, she said she was absolutely floored by what she saw him wearing on his head.

Natasha Lea said she can't understand why her son's elementary school thought the item was appropriate for an African American boy to wear.

"I did not want to believe that. That a school actually let him walk around as an African American child with a Confederate cap on," she said.

Rockingham County Spokesperson Karen Hyler confessed that the hat was given away to Lea's son as part of a class prize in exchange for "big bucks," a kind of academic currency rewarded to their students.

But the gift wasn't given in a "malicious way" by his teacher, she said.

"Before winter break in December, the class had an auction where students could bid on different items using their 'big bucks,'" she told MyFox8. The grey and black hat shows no markings on the outside but on the inside the tag, seen here, reads 'Confederate.'

The cap, one of several items donations by families to be used as prizes, was consequently given to Jacob.

Never mind the fact that there were blacks fighting for the confederacy.

Let me see. Rampant illegitimacy, astronomical crime rates, rampant drugs - all destroying the black community and she is ticked off over - a HAT?????????

Blacks DID support the confederacy at times - either aiding their masters on the field, in construction work, and - too late for the Confederates - as soldiers.

Somewhere in the Bill of Rights there must be an amendment saying that Blacks and homosexuals should never be offended. The woman is obviously living in the wrong place, so she should move where this law is in effect.

This was a gray and black hat that the boy chose to bid on. If his mother hadn’t made such an ass of herself with her over-reaction to the inside tag, he would have enjoyed the cap.

This stands for a dark time in our history

Yes, yes. It was a time when a central government chose to ignore the founding principles of federalism and committed one tyrannical act after another.

It sounds familiar....

She needs a long talk with H.K.Edgerton.

A little history on the man .

H.K. Edgerton Southern Ladies and Gentlemen: It's pretty easy to understand and support people of your own race. After all, you share many of the same traits, similar outward appearance and much of the same history and culture. There is no shortage of people and organizations speaking up and advocating for their particular race. It is rare to find a person or organization that speaks up and advocates for all races. Most don't even try to understand the feelings of other races, much less advocate for them. It takes a special person to do so. It takes a person who has a deep compassion and love for all people, a person who is sensitive and caring for everyone, no matter their status in life, their circumstances of birth, their political persuasion, and their past or future promise. It takes a person without any prejudices whatsoever. It takes a person that cares more for the well being of others more than he does for himself. I have the honor of knowing such an individual. This person works everyday for the rights and well being of others. He works without pay. He has given up his comfort and a life of leisure for others. He uses the little money that people donate to him to travel and advocate for people that need his help. He tries his best to help them no matter what the color of their skin. More often than not, the people he helps the most are of a different race. He advocates for our brave, often maligned and misunderstood Southern ancestors. He seeks to right the wrongs that our federal schools heap upon our Southern children. He has marched thousands of miles carrying the Confederate Battle flag in the face of jeering bystanders. He has stood up for the beliefs that you and I share with him. He has been assaulted, hit and kicked, while most of us were safe in our homes watching TV with our families. This person is H.K. Edgerton. He is our foremost modern day black Confederate and Southern Heritage hero. He is a hero to thousands and thousands of school children and Southern Heritage advocates. He has changed the lives and beliefs of many, black and white. I believe he is a man ahead of his time. He is a man who will be remembered in history as one of the greatest civil rights activists of our generation. He is a civil rights worker who sacrificed his own well being, not for money, not for power, but for the rights and well being of others. Southern Heritage does not have a greater or more dedicated ambassador than H.K. Edgerton. To those of you who would like to make a tax deductible contribution to a non- profit organization and support H.K. Edgerton now, please make your checks payable to: Southern Heritage 411 and send it to: Southern Heritage 411, Inc. P O Box 220 Odum GA 31555-0220 Dewey Barber Owner, Dixie Outfitters

The colored soldiers are real, but the weapons may have been props belonging to the photographer’s studio, a common practice then.

Anyway, nobody clapped a Confederate cap on this kid’s head; he chose it himself only to have hysterical Mommy ruin the entire occasion.

A story by the NY Daily News to gin up outrage among New Yorkers. All part of the “DeBlasio tide”

I guess the school should have chained him to a radiator? Can't have black kids walking around and feeling free. /sarcasm

He was just doing his part..

According to Section 103-4 of the North Carolina General Statutes, Robert E. Lee’s birthday is recognized as a legal holiday in the state of N.C. on Jan. 19.

Louisiana had a relatively large number of free blacks, and black slaveholders.

One of the largest plantations in Florida was owned and operated by a Black Woman. Many of your Cherokees owned slaves.

You are all incorrect here - she SHOULD suit, the school district, for hiring a teacher that, bless her heart, knows NOTHING about the Civil War, not even blue versus grey for crying out loud!!!!

The kid liked the hat. The teacher should have seen the reality and gone to the principle and gotten money to purchase a replacement Yankee blue - then sent BOTH home to the mother to let her decide - her son’s preference or the mother’s better judgement either way.

A black kid riding his bike with a Confederate cap would be an embarrassment and he needs to know, yet needs to get his well earned prize.

My kids re-enact civil war in our back yard with both flags or only the northern flag - there’s no solely Confederate flag of any style out of respect for the dignity of my fellow Americans that might otherwise easily misunderstand.

Blacks in the Confederacy were not free enough to choose, not as free as even the poor whites to choose sides fully, that was the whole point of ending slavery(!!!!) regardless what the war was fought over.

The lives of blacks and whites in the South were and are so intertwined and the relationships are to complex for most of the Yankee media and historians to comprehend, let alone to write this history in their text books. I believe that most Yankee soldiers were astonished that it wasn’t as they were told as they invaded the South.
