HP really wants people to buy a Windows 7 PC instead of a Windows 8 machine. The PC maker has been emailing customers over the weekend noting that "Windows 7 is back." A new promotion, designed to entice people to select Windows 7 over Windows 8 with $150 of "savings," has launched on HPs website with a "back by popular demand" slogan. The move is clearly designed to position Windows 7 over Microsofts touch-centric Windows 8 operating system.

I’m there. W7 is fairly stable. As long as the drivers are available.

Be aware that Microsoft is dropping all support for Windows 7 in 2015, so it won’t be around for long.
I recently bought a Lenovo laptop. One of the main selling points for me was it having Windows 7 installed. The Windows 8 upgrade disks were included, but no way they are going on my machine.
After the stunt msoft just pulled on the people using 8.1 preview and the grief involved in downloading software items with all the foist-ware which appears to have crept in since the last time I did that, I’m thinking more and more in terms of LINUX. There was no warning that I ever saw.
It takes 2 minutes to install “classic shell” on windows 8, which bypasses metro on start and gives you a windows 7 interface.
That eliminates any reason I can see for preferring windows 7 over 8.
Wow, I just looked it up, support ends in less than a year from now, who do they think they are, HTC?
That’s too bad, because an OEM can set up Win 8 to be just like Win 7, but better.
They may say so now as a ploy to get people to upgrade to Windows 8, but I would bet it will be a later date, maybe much later. XP which has been out a lot longer is scheduled to have MS support dropped this April and I do believe in that cutoff date.
I hate my HP windows 8. I have downloaded a program to make it palatable. My laptop is a warrantee replacement. It replaced a slightly different laptop that had the much better windows 7.
I need to call them about retro fitting it.
I use Start 8, it makes Win 8.1 usable but the right menu pops up about every other time I use the mouse, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong but it is very annoying.
I’ve less love for HP laptops than I do for Windows 8.
Extended support lasts until 2020, so it’s still got life.
Too many business have JUST upgraded to Win 7 from XP to make ending support in a year realistic.
Oh, no! I like XP.
Windows 7 Service Pack 1
End of mainstream support January 13, 2015
End of extended support January 14, 2020
Windows lifecycle fact sheet
And MS just announced last week that XP will keep offering anti-malware updates until July 2015 (Microsoft: Windows XP anti-malware support to last into 2015)
Be aware that *I’m* dropping support for Microsoft Windows in 2014.
For your Ping list...
HP is getting out of the consumer PC and laptop business.
Likely they are just trying to clear out remaining backstock of machines with Win 7 installed.
