One of my most cherished memories is of watching that split screen television in college with the swearing in on the left, the plane on the tarmac in Tehran on the right.

We had no doubt that the Iranians were watching it too, given their utter contempt for Carter the appeaser.

Funny thing is that I don't even recall if the television picture was in color or black & white.

I remember the generosity of Reagan in allowing Carter to be on the plane to meet the hostages and greet them.

The Royal Navy, in the days of sail, classified ships by "rate," according to the number of guns they carried. The smallest warships, frigates, were FIFTH and SIXTH rates...as they could do little or no damage in battle..Zero is definitely a "Sixth Rate."

Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?

My son was born about 20 minutes after Reagan was inaugurated.

It was 12,054 days ago to put things in perspective. Thirty-three years.

I was 18 years old back then but I remember the day well. I was preparing to go to Marine Corps boot camp in Parris Island (Feb 10 was my reporting date) so was getting up at 5am each morning and running seven miles through the icy streets of my neighborhood like I was Rocky Balboa.

This was shortly after John Lennon was shot so the radio stations were still playing his songs on a regular basis - you can only imagine how sick I was of hearing "Imagine" - though his newer songs like "Watching The Wheels" and "Starting Over" were still fresh and when I hear them today, it takes me back to that time.

On January 20th, I was glued to the TV like everybody else as the new president was sworn in and the newly freed hostages were landing at some airport in Germany for de-briefing (Wiesbaden I believe). I wish I could say that I was a stalwart conservative back then but I was only 18 and still politically unsophisticated. All I knew was that Reagan was a change from Carter and I was okay with that because Carter did not impress me all that much.

It was a weird time in my life. I had graduated high school the year before but because I didn't want to go straight into boot camp, I took almost a year off and was working as a busboy/dishwasher at an airport restaurant in East Boston. It was just something to do until boot camp but the job did put some money in my pocket and I did get to sow some wild oats during that time.

It would be the last time in my life that I would have a carefree lifestyle. As soon as I entered Parris Island, my life has been a rocket ride since and here I sit 33 years later saying where the hell has the time gone!

Reagan was a class act, through and through. I vaguely remember Walter Chronkite bloviating about how poor Jimmy Carter had worked so hard to negotiate the release but how the president elect would get all the credit.

I despised the man then because it was thanks to his cheerleading for the enemy that a lot of good men never made it home from Vietnam, but I despised him even more then. "Why", I thought, "should a president get credit for cleaning up a mess he made?"

But Reagan, in his greater wisdom, realized 40% or so of the country had voted for Carter and it was part of his job to unite the country. So what if Carter had another moment in the sun?

Compare and contrast that attitude to BO and how he treated Bush, McCain and Romney, who had won a far greater share of the vote.

I am like you. So are so many conservatives. The left would have you believe otherwise. I was young once and swayed by their talking. What they said was very consuming until you listened hard. Then it sounds stupid, like John Kerry or Barack Obama now. It’s funny how you mature. It’s disconserting how the young people are fooled. That’s what the democrats play on. If not, why do people turn conservative when older? If only the young would wake up sooner!

There’s no comparison at all with Reagan..from anybody...Eisenhower comes close....I’ll never forget how proud I was of Reagan when the hostages were released. Those raghead militant mad men knew that they were dealing with a totally different animal than Carter.

Right after Reagan's landslide victory, my mom & I went out and bought a Magnavox VCR (top of the line!) and four videotapes so that we could record the inauguration. Back then, it cost $1,200 but we wanted a record of our guy being sworn in. Little did we know the hostages would be released the same day!

I've still got those videos (now converted to DVDs).
