Today in History: Ronald Reagan inaugurated and Iran released the hostages.

"I don't know about you, but I am impatient with those Republicans who after the last election rushed into print saying, We must broaden the base of our partywhen what they meant was to fuzz up and blur even more the differences between ourselves and our opponents.
It was a feeling that there was not a sufficient difference now between the parties that kept a majority of the voters away from the polls"
"Our people look for a cause to believe in."

We had no doubt that the Iranians were watching it too, given their utter contempt for Carter the appeaser.
Funny thing is that I don't even recall if the television picture was in color or black & white.
I remember the generosity of Reagan in allowing Carter to be on the plane to meet the hostages and greet them.
Contrast with the “we won” “republicans need to sit in the back of the bus” hostility bristling from Obama.
But it is conceivable;
Today in history, zero reassured America our embassy's were safe and secure while the _______________ was being attacked and burned.
14 dead, 32 injured
(It's conceivable)
Obama is a third rate, petty little boy in big boy’s pants running a nation that is apparently filled with haters and racists who want nothing more than to get back at whitey.
There is no comparison of him with Reagan, Lincoln or any other President his minions deign to make.
We are all victims of the biggest shenanigans that has ever been perpetrated in this country.
444 was the 3 digit number in Maryland lottery that day (444th day of hostage crisis)
Broke the bank!
The Royal Navy, in the days of sail, classified ships by "rate," according to the number of guns they carried. The smallest warships, frigates, were FIFTH and SIXTH rates...as they could do little or no damage in battle..Zero is definitely a "Sixth Rate."
I don t know about you, but I am impatient with those Republicans who after the last election rushed into print saying, We must broaden the base of our partywhen what they meant was to fuzz up and blur even more the differences between ourselves and our opponents.
It was a feeling that there was not a sufficient difference now between the parties that kept a majority of the voters away from the polls. When have we ever advocated a closed-door policy? Who has ever been barred from participating?
Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?
Let us show that we stand for fiscal integrity and sound money and above all for an end to deficit spending, with ultimate retirement of the national debt.- CPAC 1975
My ‘nautical’ bad. I guess I was referring to our illustrious Postal Service.
VICTORY can be had - NO RINOs!
Yes!!
My son was born about 20 minutes after Reagan was inaugurated.
I was 18 years old back then but I remember the day well. I was preparing to go to Marine Corps boot camp in Parris Island (Feb 10 was my reporting date) so was getting up at 5am each morning and running seven miles through the icy streets of my neighborhood like I was Rocky Balboa.
This was shortly after John Lennon was shot so the radio stations were still playing his songs on a regular basis - you can only imagine how sick I was of hearing "Imagine" - though his newer songs like "Watching The Wheels" and "Starting Over" were still fresh and when I hear them today, it takes me back to that time.
On January 20th, I was glued to the TV like everybody else as the new president was sworn in and the newly freed hostages were landing at some airport in Germany for de-briefing (Wiesbaden I believe). I wish I could say that I was a stalwart conservative back then but I was only 18 and still politically unsophisticated. All I knew was that Reagan was a change from Carter and I was okay with that because Carter did not impress me all that much.
It was a weird time in my life. I had graduated high school the year before but because I didn't want to go straight into boot camp, I took almost a year off and was working as a busboy/dishwasher at an airport restaurant in East Boston. It was just something to do until boot camp but the job did put some money in my pocket and I did get to sow some wild oats during that time.
It would be the last time in my life that I would have a carefree lifestyle. As soon as I entered Parris Island, my life has been a rocket ride since and here I sit 33 years later saying where the hell has the time gone!
I despised the man then because it was thanks to his cheerleading for the enemy that a lot of good men never made it home from Vietnam, but I despised him even more then. "Why", I thought, "should a president get credit for cleaning up a mess he made?"
But Reagan, in his greater wisdom, realized 40% or so of the country had voted for Carter and it was part of his job to unite the country. So what if Carter had another moment in the sun?
Compare and contrast that attitude to BO and how he treated Bush, McCain and Romney, who had won a far greater share of the vote.
Thanks for sharing and for your service!
I am like you. So are so many conservatives. The left would have you believe otherwise. I was young once and swayed by their talking. What they said was very consuming until you listened hard. Then it sounds stupid, like John Kerry or Barack Obama now. It’s funny how you mature. It’s disconserting how the young people are fooled. That’s what the democrats play on. If not, why do people turn conservative when older? If only the young would wake up sooner!
There’s no comparison at all with Reagan..from anybody...Eisenhower comes close....I’ll never forget how proud I was of Reagan when the hostages were released. Those raghead militant mad men knew that they were dealing with a totally different animal than Carter.
I've still got those videos (now converted to DVDs).
Remember the joke that was going around; “What’s flat and glows in the dark? - Teheran after Reagan’s inauguration.”
