I am pretty sure the Roman Catholic rite of exorcism does not include any stabing. The must be of some other faith that I never heard of.

“Avery, who has received mental health counseling, moved twice in recent years — from Western Maryland to Ohio and then to Montgomery, according to a minister whose church she attended. A relative said she had separated from her husband. Writings on her Facebook page suggest that she believes in God and fears Satan.”

“People are being deceived left and right every day and don’t care to realize it,” she wrote. “They think it’s safe and everything’s a game when this world is owned by satan himself who wants to dumb us down to think there’s no consequences for what we do.”

“At the time, she was living in Hagerstown, Md., said Pastor Dan Thornton of Maranatha Brethren Church there. He met Avery through a program that provided groceries, haircuts, dental care and other services to families. Members of the church gave Avery and her family rides to church and bought furniture for them.”

“The family was forced to leave its apartment and was going to leave behind the furniture, Thornton said. But he and others retrieved the furniture, sold it at a garage sale and gave the money to Avery’s family. He said she projected confidence but suffered from mental illness. Church members regularly gave her rides to mental health counseling sessions, he said.”

“Sometimes, she seemed to be in a low valley,” said Sue Thornton, Dan Thornton’s wife.”

Jeeze, ya think Sue?

I don’t think the Brethren Church endorses the exorcism of children through stabbing. It sounds to me as if she was seriously mentally ill but channeled and mixed up her religious beliefs with her mental illness and fears about the devil and who knows what else. Many people, including mental health professionals and members of her church and her husband and family probably knew just how mentally ill and potentially dangerous she was but she was still allowed to keep caring for her four young children; well now there is only two and they will be in CPS’s care once they get out of the hospital. Sad.

Before Susan Smith was Diane Downs — she shot her 3 kids in a car late at night and blamed it on a carjacker. One girl was killed, the son was paralyzed and the other girl was in very bad shape but did recover and testified against her mother in court. The 2 surviving children ended up being adopted by one of the prosecutors in the case.

It was just too sick to believe. And it seems like the stories keep getting worse over time.

I’m sure she’ll find a good woman in prison.

Frankly I have no clue how on earth these women didn’t get the ultimate punishment.

It's just determined to be very late term abortion.

If you mean he did something to get her upset with him then I agree. Although who knows what that was. Maybe he ate the last of the grape jelly.

Otherwise the blame is entirely hers. She was not crazy in the sense she didn't know what she was doing. She was evil crazy. She killed the kids for one reason, to hurt him.

She planned it. She called him to let him know what she had done.

Evil bitch.

Knock it off. There have been plenty of white women who have killed their children. Hello, Andrea Yates.

Don't pin this on her blackness.

“If you mean he did something to get her upset with him then I agree.”

No, I don’t mean that at all.

I meant he knew his wife was mentally ill. Her shrink had told him: do not leave her alone with the children. He and his mother were tag-teaming it so someone other than Andrea would always be there.

But that day he left her alone.

Aside from anything else, he did that, and then his children were dead.

Rusty Yates is not a blameless victim, he’s a very irresponsible person, criminally negligent in my non-professional opinion.

Before any of you go getting wild and ballistic here about what Dan and Sue Thornton said about this incident, consider the media. I just talked with both Dan and Sue today. Dan was interviewed, and the press wanted to have him give a sound bite about exorcism but he didn't think it would be a fair treatment of the subject. Still, though, in the interview, they tried to push it. Dan deflected the issue, not because he didnt have a stance on it but because he knew they would try to manipulate it.

The lady stopped going to the church about 2 years ago. At the time she was fairly loving towards her kids.

What the media should be going after is the mental health clinic and the possible psych drugs they were on. But you know they won't do that.

Perhaps you meant to address your remark to someone else, as all I said was:

Horrible. May our Lord watch over the surviving children.

Not that it really matters here, but the Brethern are very liberal. All that feel-good stuff about diversity and garbage like that. Very nice, but unwilling to call sin what it is and more worried about including various colors, if not individuals.

I think you meant to reply to me. First of all I wasn’t going “wild and ballistic” about what Dan and Sue Thornton said. I was only commenting to what Sue Thorton said when she said “Sometimes, she seemed to be in a low valley”. I wasn’t knocking what she said but only commenting on the fact that she was probably stating the obvious.

Dan was interviewed, and the press wanted to have him give a sound bite about exorcism but he didn't think it would be a fair treatment of the subject.

Since you know him, I’d be interest on what he would consider to be fair treatment of the subject. I wasn’t under the impression that the Brethren Church was all that into the casting out of demons or do it yourself exorcisms. But evidently after she left Hagerstown and the Thornton’s church some two years ago, Zakieya Avery started attending a church in German town, Exousia Ministries that allegedly did and that’s where she met Monifa Sanford but they both left that church a while later to become self described “Demon Assassins”.

http://www.wjla.com/articles/2014/01/pastor-dan-thornton-talks-about-helping-zakieya-avery-99441.html

What the media should be going after is the mental health clinic and the possible psych drugs they were on.

I agree and if you read my post you would have seen where I mentioned the mental health professionals. As far as the possible psych drugs; I am not of the opinion that all psych drugs are always a bad thing or that some people really need them just as they sometimes need hospitalization and lifelong monitoring; that they can and do help some people with serious mental illness. We don’t know if she was on them or if she was, if she stopped taking them and if so why, on her own or on who’s advice?

The website for Exousia Ministries in Germantown is down but I wonder if they are affiliated with this one (which looks rather like a shady operation to me):

http://exousia-ministries.org/

In any case, a person such as Zakieya Avery who is severely mentally ill and had to be hospitalized at least twice (and one typically doesn’t get hospitalized for mental illness unless they are in danger of doing grave harm to themselves or others) is probably also someone who shouldn’t be ministered to about and encouraged to seek out and stamp out demons (and I’m not implying that that’s what Pastor Thornton did, he even mentioned he and members of his church taking her to her mental health appointments).

And the field of psychology and psychiatry certainly isn’t without many faults of their own, quacks of their own, but as in this case, severe mental illness combined with a strong belief in the Devil and in Possession and in extreme measure for casting them out if that’s what she in part learned at the Germantown church and then took it to her own deluded extremes, is in my opinion a dangerous combination. Telling someone who is truly mentally ill (if that’s what happened with the church in Germantown), or for that matter someone with any other serious medical condition, that the cause is the Devil and that they don’t need a doctor or medications but just need to exorcise their demons should be held responsible just as should the mental health professionals who did not treat them properly.

Unfortunately it is often the case that professionals are legally constrained over what they can and cannot do; it is very difficult to put someone in a psychiatric hospital, force them to take meds or petition the court to have their children removed from their care.
