Detectives in Montgomery County, Md., have charged a mother with the deaths of her two children.
Police charged Zakieya Latrice Avery, 28, of Germantown, with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. She is currently being held without bond.
The deceased children are identified as Norell N. Harris, 1, and Zyana Z. Harris, 2. The other two children are still hospitalized. They are identified as Taniya Harris, 5, and Martello Harris, 8.
Police were called to the 19000 block of Cherry Bend Drive Friday morning and discovered the victims. Avery attempted to run from officers, but was apprehended quickly.

Police on Saturday made a second arrest in the stabbing deaths Friday of two Maryland children. Officials also disclosed a motive: the alleged killers “believed they were performing an exorcism,” according to investigators.
Monifa Denise Sanford, 21, was taken into custody Saturday afternoon after being released from the hospital. Sanford was apparently injured during the same incident that took the lives of Norell Harris, 1, and Zyana Harris, 2. The children’s mother, 28-year-old Zakieya Latrice Avery, was arrested Friday.

I don’t think I ever accepted the first mom-kills-kids big media story all those years ago with the woman who strapped her kids in their car seats and then rolled her car into a lake. It was just too sick to believe. And it seems like the stories keep getting worse over time.

As for these stories, it’s like mothers these days are getting into some sort of killing frenzy. They have kids and if they aren’t killing them themselves, their boyfriends are doing it.

I’ll say this, while some of these dames (maybe the one on this thread and certainly Andrea Yates - who drowned her 5 children in TX) seem to be off their rockers, that didn’t seem to be true of Smith.
She seemed to be a cold blooded killer.

Frankly I have no clue how on earth these women didn’t get the ultimate punishment. I wish we could bring over “Guilty by Reason of Insanity” and leave it at that. They are all killers. Odd how the kids weren’t possessed until a new boyfriend came along.

Agreed. I said that to hubby just the other day while we were watching a movie. (It was pretty good “primal fear”, kind of old at this point, and funny to see the old technology, but the story holds up.)
I’ve never understood why we don’t have that.
But Yates wasn’t on the make, you remember, her rocket scientist hubby was right there on the scene; he failed those kids and his wife too.
I think I remember he got re-married, I myself would not shake his hand so I don’t know who he found to marry him. Heaven forfend he should be lonely while his wife rots in the looney bin and his children moulder in the ground.
My former psychologist told me that he had studied her file and told me that Yates (Andrea) was cold blooded and knew what she was doing. There was already something rotten in her.
I am pretty sure the Roman Catholic rite of exorcism does not include any stabing.
The must be of some other faith that I never heard of.
