Hello FRiends. So we went to see 12 years a Slave. Wow! I totally recommend it. It was a true story that does not get all Hollywood Liberal. It was basically a true to life synopsis of the time this "free" man becomes a slave. It is astonishingly good. I went because I could not believe it won the Golden Globe for 2014 as the Best Film and I had no idea about the film before that night. My wife is not convinced that it should have been best film, but I am thinking closer to believing it should be. We are off to see "American Hustle" later on this afternoon. This weekend is a quiet movie weekend. I guess we still have to see Gravity, Jack Ryan, Lone Survivor, and many more.
Does the movie show the thousands of blacks who were slave OWNERS?
If not, the movie is not accurate.
Wouldn’t see this mess if you paid me. It’s just more nurse-the-racial-grudge, blacks-are-saints, white-Southerners-are-evil indoctrination.
And if that means I’m missing out, then hallelujah, let me “miss out” some more.
Which is why the book is well worth reading as it is none of those things. Northrup was born free and worked as a musician at hotels around Saratoga New York. he was duped into working for what he thought was a vaudeville impresario during the winter season. Instead he got kidnapped and sold down the river. His portrayal of the South and people in Louisiana is fascinating as they are seen as individuals not stereotypes. The man who did the ‘as told to’ was a professional journalist not an abolitionist activist. ‘!2 Years a Slave’ is fascinating and well worth the read.
Maybe they will make a movie about my ancestors. “Irish 400 Years a Slave Of The British” :-)
LOL, let's start the countdown. Our descendants will probably be dead before that happens. ;)
Yet you never hear much about that type of sacrifice.
Tell me about the audience.
"Thousands"??
I highly doubt you can find credible documentation to support that.
Why do you doubt that? You could find the information if you wanted to.
According to federal census reports, on June 1, 1860 there were nearly 4.5 million Negroes in the United States, with fewer than four million of them living in the southern slaveholding states. Of the blacks residing in the South, 261,988 were not slaves. Of this number, 10,689 lived in New Orleans. The country's leading African American historian, Duke University professor John Hope Franklin, records that in New Orleans over 3,000 free Negroes owned slaves, or 28 percent of the free Negroes in that city.
In 1860 there were at least six Negroes in Louisiana who owned 65 or more slaves The largest number, 152 slaves, were owned by the widow C. Richards and her son P.C. Richards, who owned a large sugar cane plantation. Another Negro slave magnate in Louisiana, with over 100 slaves, was Antoine Dubuclet, a sugar planter whose estate was valued at (in 1860 dollars) $264,000 (3). That year, the mean wealth of southern white men was $3,978 (4). http://americancivilwar.com/authors/black_slaveowners.htm
I should have added - some blacks actually were slave breeders who sold their own children into slavery.
Also, apparently after the Civil War some blacks petitioned to go back into slavery because they felt they couldn’t care for themselves and were afraid they would be sent back to Africa.
This information is available if you look for it. Obviously you will not find it in the New York Times or talked about on CNN.
All white and packed. Of course I live in Annapolis Maryland so that explains a lot.
I read the whole front page of the link you provided. I’ll admit that I’ve never seen that information anywhere before today.
Thanks.
Do we need to fight the Civil War on here every day?
My God, we have enough things to argue about. Do we need to nitpick slavery? How about this, we all agree slavery is bad. No matter who holds whom, no person should be held in bondage.
I wrote about this in the Granderson thread yesterday. Where I live, the theater would likely be packed with blacks, and they tend to be angry at whites like me after these flicks. I don’t want to be in the same Cineplex when a Spike Lee movie lets out.
You don’t have to read my posts
That’s a good response. When I read the drivel coming out of the south, it makes me wish Sherman had started in Midland and made his way across. You sooooo miss the nigrahs mowing your lawn.
So you would want Sherman to destroy even more of our country?
And would you want Sherman to destroy Lexington, Concord and Boston?
There were slaves living in all those towns before slavery was outlawed. Most likely there were slave owners up in Vermont too.
If you go to the old cemeteries in that area you’d find the graves of slaves. Some fought in the Revolutionary War. One was shot on the first days of the war in Lexington. He fought with the militia and was one of ten men wounded on April 19th.
Northerners were slave owners. Should Sherman have marched from Concord to Bunker Hill and destroyed it all?
It’s a bullshit argument.
The South Seceded. It was in revolt. You got your asses kicked. The Union won. You lost. Lee took up arms against the flag he swore before God to defend.
He was a good general. For the enemy of the United States. He lost.
Those are the facts. Honor him if you will.
But do not cloud the facts with your face saving hero worship.
