The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

With gardening at a low level, the cleaning, fixing, and organizing indoors continues. I won't start any seed till February, and most will be April before I start them.
On this date, the cable car was patented in 1871-an interesting tidbit from the Farmer's Almanac.
I am posting early, because I'll be leaving shortly for St. Louis. Will be gone all day and most of the afternoon. Ya'll have fun and I'll catch up later.

I am an old person but new gardener. I have some drift
roses, planted this summer in SC and want to know when and how to prune them and feed them. Thanks for any advice.
Good morning G E. I was wanting to work outside today, but the cedar pollen is already floating in the wind. May stay inside all day again. Sucks to be allergic to that stuff in central Texas.
It is 35 deg. F. at 8:00AM here in central TX.
Forecast high for the day is 57 deg F and sunny.
Wheat finally is showing signs of growing. It has been unusually cold here in TX this winter.
Am planning to water my blackberry and strawberry plants today. The have been nipped by our very cold weather.
Will probably water the dormant trees at the farm this weekend. Preventative measure.

I have been reading more about permaculture stacking planting and companion planting. We live in very heavy clay soil and this has made everything a struggle.
Any input in either if these topics is appreciated.

Yes, a little chilly in the Hill Country but should warm up to low 60s and low 70s on the weekend.
What variety of blackberries do you have and how far apart are they planted? I miss mine that were torn out during construction. I’ve bought several varieties two different years from TSC but they all died immediately. A neighor had the same bad luck. Home Depot or Lowes has never sold any. But I still WANT blackberries, whaaa!
The outside water is off for the winter so I potted up some seeds indoors this week - brussels sprouts, bunching onions, cabbage, cilantro, parsley and a couple broccoli and cauliflower with the leftover wet potting mix. Yes, I know brussels sprouts are for fall but maybe they’ll produce a bit before the summer heat. I finally got a cabinet moved over to the windows to use as a plant shelf. It’s nose level but will have to do. I also put all the loose and scattered gardening notes into a binder so there’s no excuses.
The freeze did kill off the leaves to the amaryllis but maybe they’ll come back. It looks like a few daffodils are peeking up.

Good Morning from South Texas! It’s FRIDAY! It’s seasonable here (44) not *too* bad.
I believe I’ll hit Fanick’s tomorrow & see what kind of onion starts I can get.
Oh bgill, why’d ya have to say brussel sprouts? (My favorite veg) I haven’t summoned up the courage to try them yet (but I have seeds). Supposedly, they’re not easy. Is that untrue?
Hubby has the same problem. We have a friend who WAS allergic to cedar pollen too. He went into a cedar “forest” and picked the “seeds”, a couple from each tree and ate 1 or 3 “seeds” a day for ? time. He’s no longer allergic to cedar pollen. His wife said kissing him was like kissing a cedar tree, but he’s over his “problem” now.
I harvested my garlic a little too late and it’s starting to sprout. I’ve researched ways of preserving it (chop and freeze, chop and refrigerate in olive oil, etc.), but I’d like garden FReeper input. Do you guys have a way of preserving garlic that works well?
Our high today is 59, but I think tomorrow it will be a bit warmer. We’ll be working on the paths and a couple of new raised gardens in the community garden this afternoon. I’m going to turn some soil in one of my raised gardens. I want to plant some small red onions and put some cabbage plants in the ground and some beet seeds. I’m thinking of covering them with clear plastic to catch the warmth of the sun, then cover them at night with the garden blanket. I have no idea if it will work, hopefully it will.
Thanks patriot, I have a friend who’s dreaming of growing a giant tomato plant with giant tomatoes. I give her a copy of this. One can dream.

The same happened to my amaryllis, I’m getting ready to cut off the leaves and see if they’ll come back.
I’ve read they’re not easy but this will be my first try. Well, second try because last year Mother Nature destroyed my garden 3-4 times with floods and hail last year and by then it was too late for brussel sprouts.
