Kindergarten student locked in closet for punishment

MEMPHIS -- The Shelby County School district is speaking out for the first time about accusations that a teacher locked a 5-year-old in a closet for more than an hour.

The kindergartener was found only after the teacher went home and a sub came in.

A.B. Hill Kindergarten teacher Kristin Oshfeldt is suspended with pay while the Shelby County School district investigates some pretty horrifying accusations against her. Five-year-old Akeelah Joseph says Oshfeldt locked her in a dark classroom closet at A.B. Hill Elementary.

“I almost peed on myself because I couldn’t make it to the bathroom,” said Joseph.

Akeelah’s mother says she was found in that closet by a substitute teacher after Oshfeldt went home sick.

Teachers did this a lot when I was a kid; it was a cloak room, so a little larger than a “closet” possibly.

My Dad had his mouth taped shut (numerous times...LOL!); and was once forced to sit at his desk, with his mouth taped shut, until his parents noticed that he wasn’t home for Dinner. The teacher, who was still sitting at her desk at 6:00 PM, had decided to just make him stay until someone came looking for him so that they could all have a “discussion” about his behavior.

Needless to say, Dad was in BIG TROUBLE.

The cloak hall was a literal hall divided from the room by a single open ended wall. I could see and hear perfectly but was separated from my classmates visually. I was “disruptive” and that was in the day when you got spankings in school - and home.

Yeah, that’s it. Squirt guns, spit balls, blow guns. All manner of weaponry and anti-social behavior. School bored me to tears and, yet, today, I’m better educated, secure and happier with life than the vast majority of my peers.

Thank God I’m a country boy.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

I remember kids having to sit in the “cloak room”, even kids sitting out in the hall if they were really bad, but never in a dark closet.

That is a little weird.

I was looking at a rental property once and noticed all the doors had the locks
on the outside of them. The Realtor said is used to be a daycare. I ran out of that place.

I wonder what would’ve happened if the child’s parents were locking her in a dark closet as a form of discipline. An investigation would’ve been opened, with the child possibly removed from the home, etc.

Unless there’s a misunderstanding or another explanation here, the teacher should be fired.

It seems an awful lot of people here were locked in a closet.

Does this mean you're all "out of the closet" now? ;-)

(Just kidding.)

Exactly.

For a parent, it would be child abuse.

For a teacher? Pfffttt, no big deal......

The hypocrisy is staggering.
