HALIFAX -- Politicians are scrambling to put a brave face on an ugly situation at a Halifax recreation centre.
Sonja Power, 17, was on the cusp of earning her black belt in Aikido at a Halifax dojo when a new man joined the class. He refused to be in contact with women or to spar with any of the female students.
Power and the other women were told to stay on one side of the room and not to approach the Muslim man to respect his faith.
"I felt like a second class citizen, that I was so disgusting and unworthy that this man doesn't even want to interact with me," Power told QMI Agency. "It doesn't make any sense, why would something you choose, your religion, trump something I'm born with, my gender, we wouldn't let a religion trump someone's race."
The incident happened more than a year ago and Power's mother, Michele Walsh, said she has contacted every level of government but was ignored. She said the sensei told her to "get used to" the gender separation.
A similar situation at York University reignited the issue.
"I don't think anybody's rights should be trampled, so as a person of faith and as a woman I would be offended by this on both sides," said Candice Bergen, minister of state for Social Development speaking in Halifax. "We've seen organizations across the country for decades being able to (compromise) there's no reason this organization and this individual not to be able to do that."
Religion and gender are both protected human rights.
The City of Halifax, which owns the recreation centre, refused to comment citing privacy concerns, but said the city tries to work out human rights concerns between the parties.
I’d look at that particular religious quirk as more beneficial to the non-muslim.
If he’s a muslim, I think the Government’s position will be “tough luck lady, his culture lets him discriminate against women.”
Learn to stand up to muslims while the cost is cheap or else get used to being ruled by them.
She might be grateful for the distance.
I never had a problem with women in the classes (especially since they were usually *extremely* not guilty)... but they should definitely not be paired with men during sparing

Why “respect” the Moslem faith? The Moslem respects no one else.
But “Curves” is totally OK to have no men.
I am not in any muzzie’s corner bit women can self-segregate based on sex (not gender), then why can’t they be segregated?
And of course, she has to throw in the usually, shrill, feminazi “I felt like a 2nd class citizen” instead of the more normal “God, what an a-hole! I don’t think I like this class anymore and will go to a different one.”
But it is funny to see worlds collide. I am not rooting for either of them but there can be only one winner.
Black belt candidate? In Aikido? You would be well-advised to reconsider your statement.
I think that if a martial arts teacher wants to separate the sexes, he has a perfect right to.
On the other hand, if a martial arts class has always mixed the sexes, with the agreement of the teacher and the students, and then a Muslim comes along and demands they be separated, that’s a whole other matter.
I’d tell the Muslim that if he doesn’t like the way classes are run, he can go somewhere else.
Ah, the tragedies of conflict between the protected classes! I need a program to help identify the players, perhaps a laminated card with a flowchart of the Hierarchy Of Oppression so we know whose rights trump whose. I have a hunch I could guess who'd be at the bottom.

The religious component is a beard for all the other components.

At this point, they will work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule themselves under Sharia, the Islamic Law. The ultimate goal of Islam is not to convert the world but to establish Sharia law over the entire world.
When Muslims reach 10% of the population, they will increase lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions (Paris -- car-burnings). Any non- Muslim action that offends Islam will result in uprisings and threats (Amsterdam -- Mohammed cartoons).

It is good to remember that in many, many countries, such as France, the Muslim populations are centered around ghettos based on their ethnicity. Muslims do not integrate into the community at large. Therefore, they exercise more power than their national average would indicate.

I see it as simply a financial consideration for the facility. If they have enough demand for single-sex classes, run them. If they don't have enough demand to make it worthwhile, tell both sexes that they're going to have to associate or go somewhere else.

If I read the article correctly it is public facility so I don’t think financial concerns are at issue except for a lawsuit from one side or the other.
She has no business sparing with men to start with. Men have to take it easy on her to make her feel good or either beat the hell out of her and kicked out of the class. I don’t usually side with Muslims, but this gal needs a reality check. She’s not a man.
Suck it up Power. Now you know what it’s like to be unfairly discriminated against in the name of political correctness.
