If you were to invest 1 million?
2014-01-11 | WesternCulture

Posted on 01/11/2014 9:28:42 AM PST by WesternCulture

I am unfortunate to have lost a very dear relative of mine.

Because of this sad occurrence, I have inherited some money.

I will not use them up at bars down in Berlin, Copenhagen and Rome Et cetera, even if this seems like something natural to do.

We all like money, don't we, but honour and family ties matter more than quick thrills.

Instead, I would like to invest in healthy companies.

If you happen to possess some knowledge of American business life that might be of use, pray inform me (- of course, the stock has got to be on the public market).

Many Swedes and other Europeans too strongly believe in Nationalist values.

Just out of curiosity,Western Culture...are you at all familiar with a Brit named Pat Condell and,if you are,do you have an opinion of him? Also, what opinion,if any,do you have of the movement in Britain (which seems to be gaining momentum) to leave the European Union?

“Remit the entire sum in US dollars to: Honest Lonesome Investment Services, PO Box 666, Boston, MA, USA. You will receive double your investment by return post in six weeks, guaranteed.”

Can I get in on that deal, I have about $30K that I have to invest.

Remember this! You can lose it one-helluva lot faster than it can be made. There is an old saying, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". Meaning that having a million is better than investing a million.

Will Rogers, the American humorist, in the depth of the Great Depression said that he was far more interested in maintaining his principle than any interest from a risky investment he might earn, or perhaps lose.

Big farms generally don’t own most of the farmland they work.

I worked on a dairy farm as a youngster. The farm itself was 350 acres but the farmers farmed some 3,500 acres. We would often work in fields 20 and 30 miles away sometimes.

As far as SHTF is concerned, good arable land can be quite valuable when people need food that can’t be shipped in from Mexico.

Not 100% sure of the regulations for message boards - but wondering it you’d be required to include any disclaimers with that message (i.e., past performance is not a guarantee of future results).

What do you enjoy? I take all my profits and invest in new machinery in my cnc shop. Do you have a business that needs updating? Have you ever wanted to start one? I don’t invest in anything outside of my own business.

Unfortunately, we have discovered he is in Sweden. An entirely different approach is required.

My post is good for US investors, though.

Not if you just describe a general allocation strategy. If I recommended specific stocks, maybe. But they don’t usually care if you’re not a professional.

Rule #1: Don’t tell ‘friends’ you now have a lot of money at your disposal. That said, sorry for your loss.

Be very, very careful about your potential tax liabilities. I say this because even though you are neither a US citizen nor a US resident, the dividends and capital gains that you might receive from US investments could be subject to US taxation — as well as being subject to Swedish taxes.

The exact situation you face will depend on the precise terms of the “tax treaty” between the USA and the Kingdom of Sweden. If you invest without knowing in advance about such matters, you could get ensnarled in some very difficult and nasty tax traps.

Therefore, before you invest in the USA — or any other country — I think you MUST get professional advice from somebody familiar with both US and Swedish tax law.
