I agree that Dizzy doesn’t fit on that list.
He only won 150 games.
I did enjoy his play by play work as an announcer. Didn’t he work with Pee Wee Reese?
Now, Maddux would not belong on the list either. He was a better pitcher than all those listed.
Right behind Robin Yount.
Admittedly Dizzy Dean wasn’t the best choice, though I would take him over Glavine.
But again try
Cristy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Bob Feller, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Tom Glavine
Which one doesn’t fit?
Hell Glavine isn’t even up there on a list of best pitchers of his Generation
Maddux, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens (even without the PED), Oral Hershiser, Mariano Rivera were all more dominant than him
I find it equally amazing that none of the BBWA writers knew about the steroids either. In fact 2 of the steroid users were credited with “saving baseball” during their race to 70 home runs.
But nobody knew anything.
Amazing.
:). Exactly what you said! Great day to be a Braves fan and to have been at the stadium during those years.
Ken Griffey Jr. ought to be coming up pretty soon if Frank Thomas was eligible. He’s another five-tool guy who was anti-steroid.
I agree. They, i.e., GMs, coaches, and Bwaaaa members, all knew or should have known about widespread PED use. Their after the fact holier than thou attitude disgusts me.
Biggio didn’t make it. Just damn!
Not complete until Shoeless Joe is enshrined.
I think Biggio will make it next year. Probably the only inductee. But, Smoltz might make it on his first round considering both his starting and relief stats. Doubtful though.
I think it’s significant that Smoltz (as well as Glavine and Maddux) pitched in the heart of the steroid era.
And, I’ve never heard the slightest rumor, or reason to suspect, that Biggio or any of those three pitchers ever used PEDs.
I should have included Randy Johnson with Biggio for next year HOF. He certainly deserves to be chosen in his first year of eligibility, and I believe he will be.
Pure BS that the best big game pitcher of the last 40 years, by the name of Jack Morris didn’t make it on his last time on the list.
I believe Pedro Martinez is a first time candidate next year as well...
IIRC Smoltz is one of only two guys with 150 wins and 150 saves. I believe he also had the most post season wins of all time until Pettitte passed him.
"Why the hell is Bobby Cox in the HoF? He had Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz, and only managed to win ONE World Series."
Interesting perspective...
Most of his success came during the mile wide strike zone, when he pitched for the Mets that was no longer the case

Who would have been on your ballot Auh2? I’d have added at least Biggio and Piazza.
He of the red bat, Jacques Jones, got 1 vote. Perhaps by someone protesting the voting system? Because, really? Jacques Jones?
