Add This Fighter-Bomber to the List of New Chinese Warplanes (SU-30MK Knockoff)
War is Boring ^ | January 8, 2014 | David Axe

Two new stealth fighter prototypes. A new long-range airlifter. New drones, attack helicopters, radar planes and spy planes. The pace of Chinese air power advancements in the last three years far outstrips aerospace developments in other countries.

Now add to the list the J-16, a new twin-engine, twin-seat jet fighter-bomber based on the Russian Su-30MK. Big and powerful, with a heavy weapons load and a combat range of hundreds of miles, the J-16 could become a main front-line combatant of the Chinese Air Force and Navy, possibly bridging the gap between China’s older jets and whatever stealth models eventually enter service.

China’s defense keeps getting stronger, yet America keeps sending US industry to China.

Wake up people.

Bring back American-made goods now.

Hey, it took them 10 years to rework an old Russian Aircraft Carrier to make their “Navy.”

The Chinese are formidable but technologically 30 years behind the world.

So they’ve developed a 1980s aircraft to fight in 2010s warfare? Good luck with that ChiComs.

If I understand correctlty, they have many (no idea what THAT means) smaller carriers that have one or two planes and a helecopter (or something like that) which ... if true ... and you analyze it ... can deliver more firepower to anywhere in the world like buzzing bees.

I understand that Chinese jet engine reliability is VERY suspect. Durability? Thrust output? all suspect.

The problem is, we seem to be heading back to the 1980s.

China is rapidly closing the technological gap.

Every day making tons of things, which are re-imported right here into America.

Wake up people. We are switching places.

China is becoming the leader. China now exports more than America exports.

We run a MASSIVE trade deficit.

People wake up. Bring back American manufacturing.

It must be humiliating for the Chinese to know that they can’t even copy Western technology.

I used to take math courses with chinese nationals, they memorized every word and equation, they stayed in every night studying, they cheated for themselves and sabotaged other students, and yet, they sucked.

All told, Beijing possesses nearly 3,000 combat aircraft, approximately as many as Russia but less than a quarter the number operated by the United States

Huh? We have 12,000 combat aircraft?

The last time we had 12,000 combat aircraft was probably 1945.

Combined the USAF and Naval Air Arm operate around 9,000 aircraft of all types.

1980’s airplanes can’t drop bombs?

>> Wake up people. We are switching places.

Can’t argue with that, but the root cause isn’t stuff made abroad... it’s the abysmal, increasingly Godless moral turpitude of the American people.

Our materialistic, lazy, sleazy, entertainment-oriented culture invites all sorts of intractable problems, from an unsustainable deficit to trade imbalance to out-of-control illegal immigrant numbers.

Bring back American jobs.

The only thing the Chinese are formidable would be in any land war, simply due to numbers, but they will never be able to project beyond any land bridge.

They can copy and update all the old armament they want, it is still old armament. All their buildup is meant to intimidate the Chinese masses who are the greatest threat to the ChiComs and their nextdoor neighbors.

As smart as the Chinese people seem to be, they seem to have zero ability to come up with their own technology and are happy to copy everything.

"Jobs... JOBssssss..."

But seriously, I think our trade imbalance is an effect of deeper failings, rather than a root cause cause.

So sorry, but your understanding is incorrect - unless you want to define a frigate with a helicopter flight deck as a “small carrier”. Jane’s Fighting Ships is a good place to start. Your local library should have a current copy.

“1980’s airplanes can’t drop bombs?”

In the smoking crater the plane made when it was shot down by modern air-defense or aircraft, sure. This puts them on par with the Russians, maybe. It might helped if the Chinese had more than 1 Russian-made carrier and actually knew how to fly naval ops.

I agree partway.

The problem is there is a section of the GOP who would sell American down the river, if they could make another dime.

I am not in that camp.

China is becoming richer, more affluent, more capable and will be becoming more dangerous to America and the rest of the world.

China is a huge country.

I hope China doesn’t morph into a mean country, but we need to start paying very close attention.

And we need to start also, bringing back American jobs.

We had a good run selling stuff off to China.

The problem is, China is becoming rich, and capable.

We need to compete. Not sell out.
