It was specifically about the “poorest county in the US” which is in Kentucky. Anyone with any brains or talent gets out. What’s left is not appealing.

The opening graf:

Owsley County, Ky. — There are lots of diversions in the Big White Ghetto, the vast moribund matrix of Wonder Bread–hued Appalachian towns and villages stretching from northern Mississippi to southern New York, a slowly dissipating nebula of poverty and misery with its heart in eastern Kentucky, the last redoubt of the Scots-Irish working class that picked up where African slave labor left off, mining and cropping and sawing the raw materials for a modern American economy that would soon run out of profitable uses for the class of people who 500 years ago would have been known, without any derogation, as peasants. Thinking about the future here and its bleak prospects is not much fun at all, so instead of too much black-minded introspection you have the pills and the dope, the morning beers, the endless scratch-off lotto cards, healing meetings up on the hill, the federally funded ritual of trading cases of food-stamp Pepsi for packs of Kentucky’s Best cigarettes and good old hard currency, tall piles of gas-station nachos, the occasional blast of meth, Narcotics Anonymous meetings, petty crime, the draw, the recreational making and surgical unmaking of teenaged mothers, and death: Life expectancies are short — the typical man here dies well over a decade earlier than does a man in Fairfax County, Va. — and they are getting shorter, women’s life expectancy having declined by nearly 1.1 percent from 1987 to 2007. If the people here weren’t 98.5 percent white, we’d call it a reservation.

When my FiL died, I do not recall my MiL being taxed, in anyway.
(I take care of her stuff since then)

However that was pre Corzine...

Oh, what a perfect word-

The driveby media never learn
To muzzle incautious speech-
They reign as the demimonde
From depths they always reach

Heaven forfend that honesty
Should ever taint the story
That Obama’s precious minions
Are spinning for his glory...

There is a hazard this time-
People are about tired enough
To tar and feather in effigy
The fools who peddle that stuff...

Thats a red herring

Use will spike initially, then even right back out.

And FWIW, one unmentioned upside, is that DUIs will probably go down, since smoking in public places is pretty much outlawed, CD sales will go up, as people elect to chill at home.

Better public safety, less money spent on Jails.

Good public policy.

oh and those who break the law by driving drunk will suddenly become law abiding in re dope? right. RME. and promoting CD sales is a goal somehow? what a load of crap. i literally despise the drug culture and using it to shape public policy sickens me.

I’ll butt in and say that I saw Matalin-she makes a good advertisement for NOT getting a face stretch and snip, if one were tempted-she has that rigid look to her face that is so creepy...

That besides the Prison industry, is the most threatened anti-liberty lobby,

Seagrams, does not want Archer-Daniels Midland cutting into their profits.

people need to F*ing learn to live life straight up sober and maybe we as a society could then pull ourselves up outta this miasma into which we are sinking, instead of getting lost in drugs and alcohol and looking at life through a blurred lens of mind altering substances. LOSERS!

Two points on that issue...

Dope smokers, are spotted because they drive too slow and over cautiously, it’s a long running joke-observation.

Secondarily, people who want to indulge in that sort of thing, will...(at least a Majority) prefer to stay home, and chill on their terms.

Third, using Prisons to shape policy is bad public policy, drug use is a public health issue.

Lastly God made grass...Man made Booze...who do you trust more?

Joking aside, from the Liberty side, the health side, the violent crime over territory side, the ability to regulate and tax side, the positives outweigh the negatives by a country mile.

So, the whole water i to wine thing, was....unecessary.

People need a chance to do what they will, and at appropriate times.

Read carefully what I said.

Nowhere did I go Bob Dylan, or Timothy Leary.

There are better public policy ways, to handle this particular issue.

I have Dave’s take on the pot issue, and I haven’t smoked in forever, either. I just don’t see where the prohibition of a food or other substance in any way benefits anyone but those who get paid to enforce rules-parents need to be responsible for teaching their kids to leave pot alone, just like alcohol-it will never be 100% effective, but neither is anything else you try to keep a kid from doing-parents need to step up and really bring up their kids-we cannot save everyone from themselves...

Brrr-like a snake watching something-her mouth wasn’t as pouty as some-like Dolly Parton, for instance-but that stiff mouth and staring eyes are a dead giveaway-I’m sure Nancy Pelosi thinks she looks natural, too...
