American culture is more than the garbage on tv or lowlifes playing the knockout game.Out here in the country things have remained largely unchanged.Good people helping each other when needed, very low crime rate.If I need help with a project on the farm,my neighbors will give me a hand.If someone has a problem,I go when called.

Cantonese spoken on the street in HongKong sounds horrible, and the social norms there take getting used to. Its not the language in itself, but the way it is normally used. Cantonese for my money is, in its typical application, one of the worlds worst sounding languages.

Well, it's clear that you don't hate the Germans. When I speak with Germany-haters the first thing they say is that German is an awful sounding language.

I have also heard many people say that any Chinese sounds like screaming gibberish. I did take some Chinese and the up/downs/even tones didn't require any notation of VOLUME. Nothing sounds too bad if it isn't screamed and MOST things sound worse if they ARE screamed...cheering aside.

Alas, I am not Chinese.
I have spent too much time arguing against people who complain about them ( in Asia and the US) for whatever reason. For the most part it is envy, resentment or fear, finding some lack of social polish as an opening for complaint. These complaints are useless.

My dad, who grew up in the European Community in China, says the Chinese value money over everything else and will do anything to get it.

Actually, you could pretend to be Chinese. Buddy Hackett made a career out of it only using a rubber band.

After 44 years of teaching ... and THOUSANDS of Chinese students I learned to take'em as I saw'em. They are like any other students.
The ONLY difference in the Chinese is that they have perfectly round nostrils. Lol. I asked my Chinese students how they could tell Chinese from other Oriental Asians. They told me that. So, I had the perfect way to see if students were Chinese or not....."Oh, look, up there in the sky. Is it a bird, a plane...no, it's.....:o)

The Chinese DID have the one-baby policy and thus almost FORCED the baby-girl infanticide. They DO prefer boy babies. THAT I never did get. What did Maurice sing about? "Thank heaven for little girls. Without them what would little boys do?" Great movie--"Fanny" from 1961.

The comments I hear are mostly from blacks.

Western civilization, more specifically, it is the American system of expanded opportunity and freedom that allows such people to achieve the success that they have had. In their native countries, for the most part, such success for people in their social groups would be impossible. American citizens who are less successful should emulate their example.

Filipino comedians were specialists at making fun of Chinese.
Not so much anymore.

AMY CHUA AND FAMILY

I wonder what would happen to Amy's reputation if one of her daughters passes on a Rhodes Scholarship to run off with a snake oil salesman....

RE: In places like Malaysia the Chinese dominate the useful roles in society through sheer superior competence in spite of discrimination against them.

Yep... that happens in Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand as well.

In fact, if you dig deeper, you will discover that a significant number of those “Vietnamese” (Note the quotes) who were able to pay in GOLD to escape the communists ( many becoming boat refugees) when the South fell were ethnic Chinese.

Is the author right that culture is causation of disparate results from different ethnic groups—or is it simply a concomitant result?

She and her husband also conveniently leave out several subgroups that rival Jews in their educational and financial results, such as immigrants from India, Unitarians, and even Irish-Americans.

RE: the Chinese value money over everything else and will do anything to get it.

Convert some of the Mel Brooks jokes about Jews ( and make them Chinese ) and you’d have a similar stereotype.

We are a western country and we don’t need any more obnoxious Democrat-supporting harridans from East Asia. Deport!

“Chua wrote about calling one of her two daughters “garbage” for being rude, dismissing a homemade birthday card as subpar (“I don’t want this — I want another one”), refusing to let her girls watch TV or participate in school plays or have sleepovers, of threatening to give away a beloved dollhouse if her daughter couldn’t master a complicated classical composition within days.”

So, being a coercive emotionally abusive parent who states as a goal the propagation of narcissism (’we're superior’) is the best parent? Absolutely not!

In reality, many bad human behaviors can provide advantages in the pursuit of socioeconomic success, but ultimately diminish the individual as a human being, and are damaging to society over the longer term. Examples: Being ruthless, unencumbered by ethics, lacking empathy or concern for others, willing to do anything to ‘win’, being a good liar who is willing to say anything to promote oneself, etc.

I also would suggest that groups of people who propagate the idea that they are ‘superior’ are more likely to support or promote people who belong to their group, thus perpetuating their concept of group superiority. Based on what she and her husband write, would anyone who doesn't belong to one of the groups she's listed think she or her husband would be objective or fair on an admissions committee, or in hiring practices, or reviewing proposals or manuscripts?

Further, the co-existence she describes of believing you are superior, but also having insecurity, is a perfect formula for rationalizing bad behavior (e.g. ‘I am superior because I am a ....., but people don't like us and want to persecute us, or are jealous of us, so I am justified in doing whatever it takes to prove my superiority against these prejudices etc.’). It's a slippery slope. Hitler promoted this concept of group superiority, with devastating consequences.

Incidentally, the assertion by this author that the concept of group superiority is antithetical to liberal thought, is erroneous at best. As we've all witnessed the left appear often convinced of their superiority, and look down their noses at others.

They’re beginning to discover that a lot of what made the Philippines what it is today, came from Chinese descent.

For instance, their genius national hero, Jose Rizal, is actually of Chinese descent. So is their former and current president (both with the surname of Aquino, but trace their ancestry from Fujien province, like Tiger mom, Amy Chua), so is their former Archbishop - Cardinal Sin.

The huge Philippine conglomerates — ShoeMart, Jolly Bee ( which rivals McDonalds in the Philippines ), Big banks, shopping centers, and even now, the Philippine Air lines, are all owned and operated by ethnic Chinese.

I was in Manila for business for several months and went to one of their elite Catholic universities -— De La Salle -— I couldn’t help but wonder if I was back in UC Berkeley. Almost every other person I spoke to had a Chinese family name — Lim, Chua, Tan, Sy etc.
