RE: Filipino comedians were specialists at making fun of Chinese.
Not so much anymore.

They’re beginning to discover that a lot of what made the Philippines what it is today, came from Chinese descent.

For instance, their genius national hero, Jose Rizal, is actually of Chinese descent. So is their former and current president (both with the surname of Aquino, but trace their ancestry from Fujien province, like Tiger mom, Amy Chua), so is their former Archbishop - Cardinal Sin.

The huge Philippine conglomerates — ShoeMart, Jolly Bee ( which rivals McDonalds in the Philippines ), Big banks, shopping centers, and even now, the Philippine Air lines, are all owned and operated by ethnic Chinese.

I was in Manila for business for several months and went to one of their elite Catholic universities -— De La Salle -— I couldn’t help but wonder if I was back in UC Berkeley. Almost every other person I spoke to had a Chinese family name — Lim, Chua, Tan, Sy etc.

I went to LaSalle myself. Old Taft Avenue boy, me.
My Engineering class thirty years ago was 80% Chinese.
They aren’t “beginning to discover” anything. They knew it. Now they are finally willing to admit it.

Oh, and the architectural atrocities you probably noticed at LaSalle were the result of noveau riche Chinese donors with no taste. There is a serious downside to a lack of polish. The original 1920’s building commissioned by the Christian Brothers is lovely.
