Marriage is an institution. Prison is an institution.
It all depends on where you want to be institutionalized I suppose. It costs lots and lots MONEY to get out of the first institution.
The second institution just costs time...one's life.
I guess it just depends on what is more important--money or time.

I lived in the middle east for five years and it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get a divorce. A man doesn't just divorce a wife, easy to do in the West, he divorces an entire family tribe.
Marriages are ALL arranged. Men have no more choice that women. In Saudi Arabia, the women of the family take the ENTIRE matter into their own busybody hands.

Okay fine, but he can under islam beat his wife for discipline. Why didn’t he go this route? If she’s torture to live with maybe he could get her to at least be quiet for awhile. Not that I think it’s a good solution, I’m just saying you’d think he’d come up with something better than “i want to go to jail”.

Not that I think its a good solution, Im just saying youd think hed come up with something better than i want to go to jail. The family/tribal system is locked up tight. If a man beats his wife he has to contend with the ENTIRE family of his wife AND with his own entire family. There is NO escape for him.
Also, much depends on the wealth, status and power of any said family. If he's from a poor, low-status family, I ASSUME that he can get away with most havoc, but in middle class and wealthy families...watch out.
I also it assume that it depends on the personality of said matriarchs. I imagine some don't care, some care too much and that most are somewhere in between.
Lol. THAT'S why so many young Saudi men LOVE leaving their strict Muslim country and visiting the West...no rules.

Bryan and I don’t fight, but we occasionally bicker. Then we escalate and say outrageously funny things about each other, start laughing, and it’s all over.
It’s just a game. We are very happy together. And I only nag him to do what he wants anyway.
It only took me six months of saying “Nothing runs like a Deere” to get him to buy a John Deere lawn tractor and trade in our “FORD” (Fix Or Repair Daily) Cub Cadet.
