Hi Greeneyes! I was hoping either you or one of the garden freepers could give me some advice about Amaryllis. I purchased a bulb prior to Christmas and lo and behold... it bloomed Christmas Eve (100% luck). My question is what do I do with the bulb now? Do I plant it in the garden in the Spring or is there a way to keep it somehow so it can bloom again next Christmas? All advice is appreciated!!

My expierince with Amaryllis is that they bloom once a year. They are a bulb,so they usually double the next year.

Where do you live?
In many areas amaryllis is very happy outdoors year round. It will go dormant in the winter, but then bloom in the early summer. Many bulbs need to go dormant in between bloom periods. So in really warm places, folks store them in the fridge for a false winter. Buried deep, amaryllis will be fine if the temp drops to zero.

I’m in the NW. Was given an Amaryllis many years ago, it bloomed, then I read all the material about how to get it to bloom again. Anything that takes that kind of timing of darkness in closets and right temperature can just forget it...not going to happen.

So, it is in an East facing window, in same pot, watered once a week and blooms every year. It is in a place where lights are not on in the evening (this is one of the instructions to get them to bloom again). Leaves are big and bold throughout the year. It has multiplied and provided many gifts and filled lots of pots. I’ve never planted them outside but will try it. I think they might rot in our wet soils. This past summer I did put them out on the deck and they loved it. I need to repot them again as they are chock a block.
