Mysterious markings on Japanese kamikaze flying bomb baffle museum experts

"A museum is appealing for experts to help them decipher mysterious codes written on the side of a World War Two kamikaze plane....The model held by the Fleet Air Arm Museum is believed to have been captured by Allied troops in the Pacific....They were fixed to the underside of bomber planes, before being flown up to a height of 12,000ft and released.

The vessels would be piloted by suicide pilots, who aimed for Allied ships and would inevitably die on impact. They could travel unaided for 21 miles, reaching a maximum speed of 475mph. Only 800 of the aircraft were ever made... 'There's a grab handle fixed to the inner wall of the cockpit as acceleration generated by the three solid fuel rockets would have been incredible.'

The name of the plane means 'cherry blossom' in Japanese, and a picture of the flower is painted on its side along with the mysterious symbols...."

Some Kamikaze pilots survived. Not every mission did a “worthy” target avail itself and the pilot would RTB. Kamikazes would only attack worthy vessels and some would not attack destroyers, I think one of them wrote a book.

Probably some kind of prayer. Maybe a blessing for the pilot only the pilot went awol before it could be launched.

Actually the Japs weren’t the only Kamikaze.

My great-uncle Gerald “Argyle” McNaughton was a Scottish Kamikaze.

He crashed his DeHavilland Mosquito in my grandfather’s scrapyard.

One looks to be a datum or balance point..its common to put on military aircraft simple service marking...Look at photos of P51 you will see a + sometimes just by the data block at the cockpit..this was for aircraft fitted with rear fuel tank because it moved the center of gravity aft

Your right, I have the book here somewhere. It was quite interesting. the guy that wrote it was going to the base they flew them out of and the plane he was on developed a problem causing enough delay that the war was declared over and he lucked out. (if I remember right)

I had read that they had a belly fuse, so if they decided to land without ramming a ship it would explode.
