A Parent Was Worried About How the Dog Would React to Newborn Baby

It can be an unsettling thing, introducing a pet to a newborn baby. Though it’s extremely rare, there have been horror stories of dogs attacking unfamiliar newborns.

In a Sunday post, Reddit user banpeiSF said he was a little worried about his Corgi, Wilbur, meeting the family’s newborn baby. However, his concerns turned out to be completely unwarranted.

In fact, the two have seemingly become inseparable. Take a look (captions via Reddit):

We had a similar experience when we brought our daughter home to meet our German Shepard. Everyone told us to get rid of him because he was old (11) and had never been around small children. After she came through the door she belonged to Kramer, she could do any thing to him she wanted and he was the kindest most gentle thing ever. God knows we all miss him! Dogs are great.

My Sheltie was like that. He LOVED babies. I could leave him to ‘watch’ the baby with his head across the baby’s legs as he slept on the floor, and Robin would bark for me if the baby woke up. Kids learned to walk by holding onto is long coat. He even trick-or-treated with the neighborhood kids, holding his own pumpkin. They all knew and loved him-he even wanted to get on the school bus with the kids. He never growled or got aggravated in any way. Infinite patience. Must have been the ‘herding’ instinct. Smartest, sweetest dog I have ever known.

Most dogs live to serve mankind. I have rarely lived without them, and hope that will remain so during the rest of my life.

My 2 yr old grandson has been coming over every Sunday since he was a month old. Our dogs love him. They follow him around everywhere. It might have something to do with the fact that he is always dropping cookies, but they lose their minds everytime his mom drops him off. They seem to know that he shows up at 7:30 every Sunday morning and they all wait by the door for him.

Fits right in with the pack structure of wolves, from whom dogs are descended.

In most packs, only the alpha male and female will breed and have cubs, but the entire pack will cooperate in raising them.

A dog is psychologically a wolf that never grows up all the way and achieves alpha status. His master and mistress are always the alpha pair, and their children are the alpha pair’s cubs.

Suggest bringing the little t shirt the newborn wears in the nursery and give it to the dog at home before the baby is brought home. The baby’s scent will then be familiar to the dog and non threatening.

Our Corgi loves kids...I think it is because they hold their food so close to the ground.

a dog trainer said that a child should NEVER BE LEFT ALONE WITH A DOG.

DOGS DO SOME WONDERFUL THINGS FOR THEIR OWNERS.

YET, IT IS NOT WISE TO ALLOW UNFETTERED ACCESS TO A SMALL CHILD ... EVER.

A DOG CAN COME AND GET A PERSON WHEN THE CHILD IS FUSSING, AND SLEEP UNDER THE BABY BED, BUT DO NOT TRUST THEM TO BE ALONE WITH THE BABY. IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN BE MISTAKEN IN THIS MATTER.

WE KNOW DOGS CAME FROM THE WOLF. DOGS EAT WILD ANIMALS WHEN GIVEN THE CHANCE, OR WHEN HUNGRY ENOUGH..

STOP YELLING!

I didn’t say they left the baby alone with the dog.

I said that the dog is very protective of the baby.

Of all the breeds, I think Corgi’s are on the very low end for human attacks. Ours gets more excited about strangers and kids coming into our home than she does about her own family. Being a herding breed, she loves to chase the grandkids without end.

Nice video. However . . do the parents know where that dog’s tongue has been? What else that dog has licked? I had a boxer that instinctively knew babies were off limits.

I love dogs way more than most. My 3 yr old grand son was bitter severely 3 times in his hand and wrist 2 days ago. Is the 1 in 100,000 chance worth it? No, no it is not.
