(STMW) – A veteran Chicago Police officer is accused of shoving an elderly gas station customer in Oak Lawn, leaving the 89-year-old man with a broken hip, Cook County prosecutors said Saturday, the Sun-Times is reporting.
David Barrett allegedly became upset on Dec. 12 when a pump began malfunctioning at a Shell gas station, near 105th Street and Cicero, and went inside to complain.
The victim, who was in line in front of the 58-year-old Barrett, asked him to calm down, prosecutors said. Barrett reacted by pushing the senior citizen in the chest with his hands, causing him to fall, prosecutors said.
The elderly man broke his right hip from the fall and required surgery, prosecutors said. He also tore his right rotator cuff as a result of the tumble.

The defense attorney said the arrest was overblown: “This case is not about a battery. It is about how Oak lawn police treat a Chicago police officer.”

A cop does this and we have to focus on the years he spent as a soldier and a cop.
Maybe this is the 1st time he’s been caught after all these years.
broken hips at that age are frequently death sentences. they get bedridden and other stuff takes advantage of their weakness.
break the frigging cops’ hip. make him work anyway. sit his fat busted ass on a chairall day without a cushion.
The way I look at it, at 89, even if the old guy can recover, how much of the time he has left will he spend trying to recover instead of enjoying life as best as he can at his age?
The stinking thug cop robbed him of a lot that can't be payed back because of his age.
This story was not reported very well. Many of those involved are not directly identified. The reader is left to presume who is whom in a couple of places.
For an octogenarian, a hip fracture can be fatal.

My thoughts too, this well could be a homicide case in short order.
sorry, these are all the facts you will get as a juror. now, you have to make your decision.
Then I have to vote to acquit, in order to avoid the possibility of an injustice to an accused.
That is how our justice system works.

Before I left America, cops, even in small bedroom communities, were morphing into jack-booted thugs.
There are very few “good old boys on the beat” today.

My dear friend broke her hip at 95. Six weeks later we were on a ship her daughter chartered.
142 friends and family.
The seas on the first night were 12 feet. She was a champ.
We soent two weeks doing everything and plenty of shore diversions.
While we had her use the wheel chair when we walked a significant distance. She walked up the stairs to get to the deck and when we went into some restaurants and venues she walked while holding onto my arm.
2 months after that trip there was a complication from the 1st operation. She contracted Vicomyacin resistant MRSA.
She had 5 more operations over the next year.
The MRSA Infected the ball of her femur and it was removed.
Once she was clear of MRSA a full hip replacement was performed.
We traveled all over the country and world for the next 5 years, went to high society balls, parties and social functions.
She was extraordinary and will always remeber her strength and poise.
She passed 6 years after breaking her hip.
In that time she visited family all over the country and they came to her home and visited her.
At 101 years and 5 months God called her home.
She left peacefully and with grace.
Today’s medical field can perform amazing procedures that are life saving and provide a quality of life unimagined just 39 years ago and in all the time of humanity preceeding.
“It’s a Great Life if you Don’t Weaken”
And
“Don’t Take Life so Seriously. No One is getting Out Alive”.
To be sure it wasn’t easy by any measure and that incident would have killed a large number of people.
But, life is tough and you gotta be tougher....otherwise you don’t belong here(I added that last bit of humor).
I don't know, but if it was a white cop, and a black victim, the news would be known around the world, like that guy down in Texas.
I think the article is intentionally vague.

Power corrupts.
Absolute power, like police have gradually grown to have post-911, corrupts absolutely.
The most important part of the story has been left out.
At least the cop went home to his family that evening, safe and sound.
Broken hip? Ha, nothing else matters.
