The American Academy of Pediatrics on Monday warned that pregnant women and children should not drink raw milk and said it supports a nationwide ban on the sale of raw milk because of the danger of bacterial illnesses.
The groups statement said it supports federal health authorities in endorsing the consumption of only pasteurized milk and milk products for pregnant women, infants and children.
The academy also endorses a ban on the sale of raw or unpasteurized milk and milk products throughout the United States, including the sale of certain raw milk cheeses, such as fresh cheese, soft cheeses and soft-ripened cheeses.
California is among 30 states that allow the sale of raw milk and one of the few that allows it in grocery stores. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration prohibits the interstate shipment of raw milk for human consumption, though it allows transport of some clearly labeled raw cheeses.

When I was growing up we’d Pasteurize our raw milk on the stove. All one has to do is heat it to 140 degrees for thirty minutes, being careful not to burn or overcook it. It still tasted like fresh milk and that took the danger of contamination away. I had a Grandfather that contracted TB and brucellosis was commonplace among the cattlemen then. Now we have OH 157 and some real bad bacterial pathogens that were unheard of fifty years ago so I’d still do the same no matter how careful the milker was. FWIW note that many diseases are reemerging because of the massive illegal immigration and the lack of controls upon the milkers. In the 1960’s dairy workers had to have a negative TB test.
The woman on the farm across the road from ours always kept a milk cow. She claimed it was only because she wanted the cream for her coffee but I think she just liked having one around. She gave us the raw milk. Oh, my, good stuff! I’d put the cream in a canning jar and shake it until it turned to butter.
Whenever you buy a container of cream that’s been frozen at some point and you can’t take the lumps, make butter.
There’s a difference between doing that yourself and having the government mandate it.
Weston A. Price Foundation ping. I suppose I will be “one of those people” that maintains a ping list for niche subjects.
Homosexual practices should be banned. They spread more disease than raw milk.
Here in S. Central PA we had several hundred people get sick this summer from raw milk that came from a well established dairy.
Green Acres Jersey Farm in Lebanon, PA had a positive test for Listeria in August, and there was a notice issued... but "several hundred people" didn't get sick... actually, I believe that nobody got sick.
Pregnant children?
I am okay with pediatricians giving that advice. When it crosses the line from advice to some thug in uniform telling me that I may not drink raw milk or a Big Gulp, then I have a problem with it. The government has no right to order me around like that, and any such command is illegitimate. We have no moral obligation to obey such directives.
Libs gotta think of everything. That’s why they need all those taxes, to keep those technocratic brain cells functioning properly . . .
I thing that was in 2012... Wasn’t listeria though. Lemme look around.
Thanks for the ping. I feel like this list might be a contender for the most elite one on this site: two members, not counting yourself. And I’ve already learned there’s more to this than tuberculosis, as well as of the existence of two different pediatric associations, one conservative, one insane.
We lived within a half mile of a dairy farm in the 50s and grew up on the stuff. It never hurt us.
When we were milking cows and while the children were small, our vet recommended using a home pasteurizer since we were getting milk from a whole herd, not just one cow.
when he milked his cow it was a like surgical procedure as far as sanitation.
We cleaned ours up well enough to get regular quality bonuses but there was alwas a chance that some ornery cow would kick the milker off into a pile of ... something ... and crud might get into the system.
So we pasteurized. So did my in-laws after my SIL at age 18 months, almost died of bacterial meningitis, possibly from raw milk.
If you aren’t used to it, immune to it, maybe you had better not.
Also IIRC the “enzymes” in raw milk could possibly be spoilage enzymes from bacteria.
YMMV. I know this might not be a popular point of view but I think people need all the facts.
I’m not against personal pasteurization or the recommendations of doctors. It’s government mandates that I and the rest of us stand against.
