JARALES, N.M. (KRQE) - A pit bull attacked and killed the woman who owned it at her home in Jarales Friday afternoon.

The Valencia County Sheriff's Office reports the 41-year-old woman had 12 dogs and was in a pen breaking ice in a water dish. Something set the pit bull off, and it mauled her.

When the woman's son came home and found her body, he shot and killed thedog.

Chet just got tired of people making excuses for reality. There is nothing in this story that indicates that anything bad happened to the pit bull. From what I can see her dog "pens" were fine. They did not look littered or dirty and they are plenty big enough.

People just have to look and see what is actually happening. The facts are easy to see, over and over again.

A very long read, but worth the time.

Very sad story. Hindsight is always easy, but the set up should have been more closely looked at. The Babysitter had the two pit bulls and two Chinchillas who were caged nearby. Just maybe, the scent of the little rodents wafted over to the baby , and since the pits could not get into the chinchilla cage, they generalized, and attacked the child as though he was one of the Chinchillas. Too many animals roaming free should be a warning, especially if the pack includes Pit Bulls. The Cops should NOT EVER have allowed the dad to see his baby son in that condition. No, I wont describe it here.

Here is some critical thinking: she was alone with the dogs, and they aren’t telling what she was doing.

Yes, Pit bulls are often trained to be vicious. Perhaps bred to be vicious now too. I’ve heard that they started out being nice enough dogs. Nothing’s as vicious, in my opinion, as stupid nasty people.

You’re basically right. They can seem quite normal but they have an unpredictable violent side that is genetic.

Had one walk by me when I was playing my guitar in a park. It was tense encounter because whatever I was doing triggered that violent streak.

Tigers can be sweet to, but they are still wild in their genes.

By the statistics, pit bulls have a violent streak that is much more easily triggered than other dog breeds.

???? All I know is that my dog is gentle (even with my other dog that takes her food/toys).

Sure she barks at other dogs walking down the street with their masters, but don’t they all do that?

she was alone with the dogs, and they aren’t telling what she was doing.

Part of my point.

I note that there is crap all information in the "article", that everyone rushes to their conclusions. But, because the dog involved is a pit bull, I will be castigated for suggesting that people actually should have a bare minimum of facts before going berserk.

IOW, the point I am making is NOT about the dog. It's about all the times people here go off full blast based on minimal information. I've seen the same thing on any number of hot button subjects. That's what I mean by critical thinking. Take the words pit bull out of this 5 line piece of sterling journalism and most of the posters in this thread would be saying, not enough info.

Yepper on the “dog in a box.”

My inlaws mosly refuse to talk with me as regards treating dogs as if they were livestock.

Smart critters do not deserve confinement!

Lots more to this story.

You Tube has plenty of vids showing kittens (or cats) and a pit bull playing. The cute is almost too much to stand.

There’s so much we don’t know about the individual dog history here. People, expecting pit bulls to be mean, may treat them that way from the start thinking they are being clever, but they are just abusing that dog as well as setting the dog up to be trouble later in its life. That would be on top of any genetic temperament issues. Historically the dogs were used to taunt bulls in old fashioned cruel bull baiting, but taunting a bull isn’t quite the same as chomping the bull and hanging on till one of them dies, which is what a modern pit in “mean” mode would do.

You're the one who implied that the lady tortured the dog.

There was no dog in a box. The “pen” is large and seems well cared for.

However, there is now a woman in a box.

PB owners get it good and hard.
If a neighbor brought one of these monsters home, I would make it a point to destroy it. They would be a loaded and pointed gun, uncontrolled, near where I live.
It won't be tolerated.

There are also photos of pits licking babies’ faces. Adorable. But there are all those photos of people missing limbs and faces etc. , unable to pay their medical bills and struggling to get used to living life very differently. The stats for pit bulls are absolutely terrible. WHATEVER the reason behind pit bull violence, it exists at inexcusably high levels and one grows tired of these dogs killing healthy adults with or without warning, and with extreme prejudice.

That’s why I’m still afraid of dogs

Surprised to see another person who is afraid of dogs. I've been afraid of them all my life and people think I'm crazy. I was a child when rabies was rampant and fatal. I was taught to be afraid of dogs.

“I’ve been afraid of them all my life and people think I’m crazy.”

Yes, me too. Hubby’s family are all dog people.

I’ve gotten a bit better about them, I’ve actually known some lovely dogs. They’ve got to be trained though, it’s 100% a must. And I’m even kind of “friends” now with my in-law’s rambunctious dog, but he’s gotten a lot better. My sis-in-law went through pure heck to get him in line. He’s a super smart dog and he’d probably be better off as a real working dog, doing police work or something like that. I just think he’s unfulfilled as a pet.

But I wouldn’t stay alone with him, not at all. That dog could rip my head off easy if he had a mind.

I’m truly a cat person, but I will say that although I don’t dislike dogs I remain wary of them all.

Yes, I have known some fine dogs, and actually had a pit bull run up behind me on a country road a long time ago. He scared me to death, but I thought being friendly might be prudent. He responded to a soft voice and followed me. I had no idea who he belonged to, but he adopted me and became my shadow for about a year. He would even lie down across the front door when I was in the house. He was guarding me. I did love that dog, but he too was liable to attack at any time. He would jump any dog that came around and he went for the throat. I never fully trusted him. My encounter with dogs is limited to those who belong to people I know well.

Yes, agreed, I think that’s the best advice.

And right now, with the reappearance of rabies I am wary of stray cats too. I used to pet any one I’d see, and got a few scratches along the way. But no more, sadly. I remember having to tell my kid that too, it really made me sad.
