I purchased 5 of the new LED light bulbs today (Lowes brand) and I have to say I am very impressed. They put out 60w and only use 13w and they are bright! Much warmer light than I expected. If they last half as long as they claim it will be worth it.

Probably going to go LED in the house as well considering my kids have never turned a light out!

The light has greatly improved on them, but they still don’t last as long as advertised.

yes but each bulb is ridiculously expensive. That is a lot of cost invested in a single bulb that can fry the next time there is a voltage surge.

IMHO the problem is the resentment to the arrogance of the government. The new style bulbs are expensive compared to incandescent bulbs however they do last longer. If you get a bulb with light from the appropriate heat range...that is yellow rather than blue white light, they are warm enough. Of course that is all personal taste. So I am with you. The new bulbs last much longer and their light is good and their electricity consumption is low so given the choice I would buy the new bulbs . But I resent forcing me to buy what they, our tyrants, demand we buy. So there is that.

I bought an LED bulb out of curiosity the other day and am pretty impressed with it too. I’d say it’s right on par with an incandescent in terms of the quality of its light, and it has none of the nasty characteristics of a CFL. Something else is that its globe is plastic, not glass, which means it won’t shatter if dropped. It was expensive but if it lasts the 15 years claimed on the box then it will pay for itself, plus save me the hassle of replacing it during that time. I think the lighting industry has come through for us with a good alternative to incandescents. At this point I don’t see a good reason for CFLs to exist, especially if LEDs keep coming down in price.

LEDs are the way to go. Cough up the bucks and get them. They won't last "2 years", but more like 20-30 years! And yes, they are available in warm soothing tones (some fun bulbs can even change colors via freaking remote!)

CFL bulbs super-suck with a third world look and feel that I call "huzz". Since I happen to be in the third world right now, I am bathing in "huzz" as we speak. Awful...

I can’t stand LED bulbs except in flashlights. I find them very harsh on the eyes.
