Light Bulb Ban Set to Take Effect
CNN ^ | 13 DECEMBER 2013 | WKRG.COM

Posted on 12/14/2013 5:04:40 PM PST by Extremely Extreme Extremist

Light bulb manufacturers will cease making traditional 40 and 60-watt light bulbs -- the most popular in the country -- at the start of 2014. This comes after the controversial phasing out of incandescent 75 and 100-watt light bulbs at the beginning of 2013. In their place will be halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs, LED bulbs and high efficiency incandescents -- which are just regular incandescents that have the filament wrapped in gas. All are significantly more expensive than traditional light bulbs, but offer significant energy and costs savings over the long run. (Some specialty incandescents -- such as three-way bulbs -- will still be available.)

The end of old light bulbs will likely anger some consumers that are already faced with higher prices for a variety of goods. But it will also tick off tea party activists since the ban is the result of the final phase of government-mandated efficiency standards.

IMHO the problem is the resentment to the arrogance of the government. The new style bulbs are expensive compared to incandescent bulbs however they do last longer. If you get a bulb with light from the appropriate heat range...that is yellow rather than blue white light, they are warm enough. Of course that is all personal taste. So I am with you. The new bulbs last much longer and their light is good and their electricity consumption is low so given the choice I would buy the new bulbs . But I resent forcing me to buy what they, our tyrants, demand we buy. So there is that.

FYI, "The U.S. will simply no longer allow 40W and 60W bulbs to be manufactured or imported, just like 100W and 75W bulbs have already been phased out. There are many exceptions to the rule, and special types of bulbs like 3-way bulbs, appliance lamps, colored lamps, and rough service bulbs will remain legal to produce and bring into the country."

Yah, but mogul-base bulbs were “obsolete” in the 90’s. Haven’t seen one for a long while (although I suppose they might be available online).

Ya. And they have mercury too. They pulled mercury thermometers off of the shelves and they force these things on us.

I’m so angry about this. The claim that the LED bulbs last for years is a lie. You fork out fifteen or twenty bucks for one and it burns out on a few months. I can’t afford that. They do want us broke, cold, and in the dark.

Agreed. As soon as they aren't $40 each and closer to $1. That’ll probably be 20 years, though if ever.

I also resent government telling me what kind of bulb I can get. The mercury bulbs were a disaster IMO. Crappy light and potentially going to make every landfill a superfund cleanup site using current EPA rules.

However, I am a fan of saving money as long as the light is warm and appears somewhat natural. Hopefully the mercury filled Gorebulbs are gone because the LED lights seem to be much better. I still have a stockpile of the older style bulbs because I did not like the mercury ones - they give me headaches.

This is liludicrous. Incandescent light bulbs have their use jus like any other product. What about infrared bulbs? I dont get it.

Yep. That’s my experience.

Fluorescent tubes seem to last for years but the compacts and LEDs burn out quicker than incandescents for me.

Yes.

I have run into some discrepancies with labeling such as you describe.

Not quite reliable because they have to step down the AC voltage to DC voltage. Electronics. And then, the LEDs wear out and get dimmer. They don't necessary burn out.

Also, I am wondering how well they do in adverse environments — extreme cold and heat and moisture and rain. Something a simple low tech incandescent bulb has managed for over a hundred years.

Nobody really complained about Congress telling us what kind of toilets we had to use, so what’s the big deal with light bulbs?..../s

Yup. I am reminded of this every time I have to flush again because there isn’t enough volume and pressure.
