Airlift gives 400-plus shelter dogs a second chance
Delco Times ^ | Dec 7, 2013 | Dana Bartholomew

The Wings of Rescue 3rd Annual Holiday Airlift whisked 500 shelter pooches aboard 14 flights to 11 cities up to the Pacific Northwest, saving each from near-certain euthanasia.

“We’re loading to Helena, (Montana) now,” barked Woodland Hills real-estate developer Yehuda Netanel, a native of Israel and cofounder of Wings of Rescue, which since 2009 has flown more than 5,000 Southern California shelter dogs to safety. “We either do it or the dogs die, so the choice is clear.”

Unable to find “fur-ever” families in Southern California, these last-chance animals were being airlifted to Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, where they would be met by loving rescue groups, humane societies, foster parents and new owners.

I rarely have anything nice to say about soviet Red Hampshire, but a man recently donated one million dollars to build a state of the art ‘no kill shelter’ for cats and dogs in the southern part of the state...it’s due to open within a few months. Can we find such a man (or woman) in the other 49 states???

Nice that they do this, but I just wish people would get their animals neutered, so we wouldn’t have such an abundance of them.

And I wish people would stop buying animals. Just get one from a shelter - so many need homes.

Many of our shelters in WA have become no-kill. However, when I have gone, they mostly had pitbulls.

wonderful!
(But there are over 20 million people in Southern California, you’d think a few hundred of them would take care of some nice woofs? Or is there perhaps something more to this story?)

I am sure a lot of people there are adopting dogs, but probably there are also many who abandon them. It’s great that they are finding locations where more people are willing to adopt.

So sad. It’s not the dog’s fault it has the big jaws of death. :( I wish people wouldn’t breed them excessively and wish others wouldn’t be so stupid as to get them as a family pet.

I agree. My little one gets bitten by our little dog (her fault) but there is no damage. I feel bad for pitbulls but not bad enough to have one.

"there are over 20 million people in Southern California, you'd think a few hundred of them would take care of some nice woofs?"

I live in the People's Republic of So. Cal. It is just very expensive to live here. Many people can't afford to have a pet.

Even if you have the money for a pet, but you're a renter, good luck finding a place that will rent to you.

It would be nice if the Pet Rescue places would do something to encourage places to rent to people with pets. People would be able adopt more animals in that case.

I found an apartment that takes pets, but I have to pay an extra $25 a month in rent for it. It gets pricey.

At least these animals in the article will get new homes in more pet friendly states.

Wings of Rescue is a registered non profit 501c3 animal rescue organization based out of Van Nuys, CA.

They provide desperately needed air transport for our rescue partners and the thousands of animals they save each year from high kill shelters in California. We fly them in private airplanes to their new forever homes and rescue organizations up and down the west coast, Idaho and sometimes into Canada.

California isn't all fruits and nuts.
Twenty seven dogs from the Central Valley left recently for Montana. May be affiliated with the same network. Also there are monthly trips to Oregon and Washington, where Chihuahuas are in great demand.

Personally, I think Montana is critter abuse, but maybe they were all long hairs.
