Few things renew American patriotism better than a trip to New England.
My wife and I had the opportunity to do that recently when we visited our daughter, who is working on a film project there for a couple of months.
Although we had been to Boston before, we were reminded of the city’s realities even before reaching the bag claim area at the airport.
This is the place where the notion took flight that simple colonists could recover their birthright of freedom by tearing themselves away from the oppressive rule of the British king and launching an experiment in self-government.
Inspired by the audacity of the men who dumped tea into Boston Harbor, Patrick Henry summed up defiance to tyranny with his legendary speech to the Virginia Legislature that concluded, “…give me liberty or give me death.”
The Samuel Adams statue in front of Faneuil Hall (aka the Cradle of Liberty) commemorates the first public meeting there, where Henry seized upon the opportunity following the Boston Massacre to mobilize the city’s citizenry against the omnipresent British troops.
His efforts were greatly aided by the work of engraver Paul Revere, whose over-dramatized depiction of the massacre served to stimulate anti-British public opinion.

I’ll not apologize for Connecticut. Anyone who *knows* would never spend any time in Groton or New London....for anything. Unless you want to get mugged. LOL
From my experience military towns and environs are very *un*friendly places for military wives.
FWIW.....visit anywhere in the deep south as a Yankee, if you want to be treated as an outsider. LOL

After a short time they love it and some of them, when their job tries to move them they quit and stay in Texas.
Small Texas towns can be a little clannish but not totally unfriendly.

I relocated from California to Texas eight years ago, and felt exactly the same when I visited the folks back home three years ago. I was literally creeped out of my mind for the five days I was there.
When the wheels finally went up on the plane back to Texas, I felt an enormous rush of relief.
Pshaw.

Alabama is probably one of the more conservative states in the country, but I can see the nanny-ism creeping in day-by-day.
Two years ago I had to put in new septic field lines, and I had to have a permit. The inspector was cordial and all, but I still asked if he was from Massachusetts. He laughed and said no (didn't understand). I didn't need that 20 years ago—we just did it. It's stupid because I'm on 100 acres and the nearest neighbor is half a mile away.
I live out in the country, on the edge of a small town, which last year banned firecrackers and fireworks.
I can still burn trash and brush on my land, but already the county is talking about permits.
When they don't let me shoot out in my firing field, that's when the war will start.

However, up north, we do not have 4 different ways to say, “Bless your heart”, either :)
The trust and politeness of the south is indescribable to us Yankees, and outright strange to have someone at the check out counter ask us how our day is...and they really want to know...
