In a nationally televised press conference on Thursday, State Attorney Willie Meggs announced that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston will not be charged with sexual assault. While it sounded as if Meggs found the accuser ) to be generally believable, gaps in her memory coupled with the discovery of another man's (apparently the complainant's boyfriend) DNA meant the standard for charging and prosecuting Winston was not met. The case, which dates back to Dec. 7, 2012, is considered closed.
In many ways, Meggs' press conference appeared to be damage control, with Meggs -- an elected official -- insisting the investigation was comprehensive and typical. He did, however, express frustration that witnesses were not interviewed earlier.

During ratification, Amendment IX was well known to have referred to respect for the rights of Englishmen under the Common Law not already recognized in the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments. At that time, presumptive innocence would only have applied to Federal crimes, but would have been understood in the Constitutions of most states.
Coffin v. United States, did not really establish the principle of presumptive innocence -- in fact the decision itself goes through the whole body of existing case law in which this was already understood.
What Coffin did do is establish that failure to advise a jury of presumptive innocence was so serious that it was, in itself, a reversible error.

Who in their right mind expected an elected official or one who answers to elected officials to take him off the team ahead of the two most important games of the year and decade for FSU? There was no chance in heck that the woman would get a fair shake in Tallahassee. When the police department tells a crime victim that there is pressure not to act, that should be a loud warning signal that there are more important matters than clearing up a crime.

Don’t know his motive... Meggs is a FSU grad. Maybe he didn’t make the pep squad. He has kicked up dirt in the past about at least one other football player who was eventually vindicated
