Sorry, something of a well-intended, mild taunt. I took drafting in the 70's when we used plastic templates and lead pencils. The first thing you learn is that draftsmen don't even have #2 or #1 pencils, they use the international HB scale. They were draftsmen. I remember working at Avco, an entire bullpen with about 50 draftsmen, not one single woman among them. I don't recall ever seeing a woman draftsperson.

I don’t have a problem with mine, but I’ve heard that you can put them in the freezer if they’re too soft. I have a few sharpeners in case a particular one won’t work. Also, clean the blades with Q-tips.

You’re probably speaking of pencils made in China. They are terrible .....and an elementary school teacher’s worst nightmare.

IMO, the only ones worth anything are the Ticonderoga pencils....cost more but they have wood sheaths that don’t shatter when they are sharpened.

Maybe so but I always thought this was a way for school teachers to make their students nervous. For example, right before the exam gets handed out, they will say "...and ensure you use a #2 pencil..."

Immediately, every pupil the room would start fidgeting around and anxiously checking their pencils to make sure they are "#2".

The joke being, of course, that just about every pencil is a number 2 pencil. The teachers just want to add an additional level of anxiety to the proceedings.

Over 50 years ago when I started a new job as a young secretary I was instructed my first task every morning was to place four newly-sharpened #1 pencils on my boss’s desk. No doubt NOW attorneys will begin a complete investigation! He was the best boss I ever had.

I use a Pentel “drafting” pencil—can’t handle dull lead.

Have used diff versions of the pointers in drafting including the ol’ sandpaper stick. Hardest to find nowadays are the crank pencil sharpeners that trimmed only the wood, leaving a 3/8” long barrel of ‘lead’ intact - then you used a sandpaper stick to point the lead.

That’s a carpenters pencil, not a drafting pencil!!

My pencil sharpeners chew up my liners and don’t really sharpen- even tried sharpening with a single edge razor blade without success.
(they’re not cheapos. They’re Estee Lauder)
