I filled out an online application for a clerk/cashier position at a national retail pharmacy yesterday morning. I've been bugged about a question on that application/assessment ever since.
"If hired, will you participate in the employers health care plan?"
I answered "no" but have to wonder why that question was even asked. Has obmacare now forced employers to "weed out" prospective employees by whether or not they are going to need health insurance?
I do the job that took 6 contractors to do 10 years ago. A am greatly appreciated and just received a bonus.
Just so we’re clear. I’m sorry I cannot offer you an opportunity at this time. I’ll keep your application in the roundfile, in case I need it in the future.
The TANF question makes sense, since employers get a tax credit for hiring former TANF recipients. Answering "No" on "US Resident" would prompt a question about whether you are legally allowed to be employed in the US.
A large percentage of people employed in drug stores are covered by their spouse's or parent's health insurance, which reduces costs for the store.
“I do the job that took 6 contractors to do 10 years ago. A am greatly appreciated and just received a bonus.”
That’s really great. Congratulations.
“Yeah, that is a sure fire way to get a job offer.”
THANK YOU!!!!
I thought I was fighting this fight alone on this thread
BULLSH!T!!!
There are lots of engineers and engineering companies that have NOTHING to do with government work. I am one and work for a small company that does no government work at all. What we and our clients do is pay a heck of a lot of taxes and attempt to follow a maze of regulations, sometimes conflicting with each other.
Well, since I HAVE been in Accounting and HR for the past 11 years, I do know a little something about payroll and running a business. What I don’t know and am finding out every day and night with my new job “looking for a job” is that things have changed since I last had to look for work. My question was not a “complaint”, it was an observation that BECAUSE of Obamacare regulations, this is now the “new norm”. We are NOT on opposing sides of this argument - I agree with you to an extent. I do not agree with your bashing the question. I for one will not be one to sit down and shut up and go with the flow - the question was odd and concerns me that some who are unemployed will be cut from ever getting past the “application” point of getting a job just because they need health insurance and will passed over for someone who doesn’t need it. It’s the state of things nowadays right or wrong, it is what it is. Maybe you just got up on the wrong side of the bed and feel the need to bash people and argue this morning, I don’t know, but do TRY to understand the point of the post rather than calling names and being ugly.
Keep in mind that the position under discussion IS for a "clerk/cashier position", not trauma surgeon. As such, since the position involves dealing with customers all day, the attitude of the prospective employee is a PRIMARY factor in the hiring process.
Too many don’t understand before anyone heard the word Obamacare, many health insurance companies required this type of question on their client’s application, if the company was of significant size.
I believe all employees deserve respect, even lowly fry cooks. I guess that is why I have stayed technical.
Yep. Writing that letter would immediately classify her as potential trouble/litigation.
On the topic of healthcare.. had a friend go to a new doctor yesterday, had a physical then a sit down with the Doc who asked the standard family history, are you a smoker etc. The Doc then asked if he had a smoke detector in the house. He asked what the relevance was and the Doc mentioned risk evaluation and then asked if he had any guns in his house and if he did are they locked up and secure. His response was, this questioning is terminated and I’ll find another doctor. While getting his coat on he said the doctor continued asking questions including does he have any children living at home with him. He walked out.

Exactly. People are scared and note they are not in control of their lives or jobs anymore.
Still, complaining at the application process will never secure any job to which you aspire.
All positions deserve respect; I call the folks that clean my office sir and ma'am. But not all individual employees act in such a way that deserve any more respect than a simple termination letter. For example, Shelia Jackson Lee once worked in an office.
The employer is trying to establish if they will qualify for a WOTC credit if then hire you.
Essentially, the Federal tax code “pays” the employer to hire certain people (in the form of a tax credit) to assist them in getting back into the workforce.
The theory at one of the schools I sub for is: If you don’t want our insurance, we can give you more hours. If you do, we can’t. So far, no problems. Maybe that’s what employers are thinking now days.
Perhaps if you answer no they will pay you more than if you answer yes.
I agree with you 100%. Your attitude is fine, and I'd be suspicious too of questions like this in the current political and regulatory environment.
It's not a level playing field between employers and applicants anymore because of government interference, and you're right to be concerned.
What, as a ‘Native American’, you’re not a favored demographic for hiring?
That would be very illegal if they did.
