School superintendent, 3 others charged in Steubenville rape case

The Steubenville School Superintendent was among four adults charged by a grand jury that investigated the case of a 16-year-old West Virginia girl who was raped last year by football players at a party in Ohio.

The indictments, a mixture of felony and misdemeanor charges, were made by the grand jury last week and announced on Monday by Ohio Atty. Gen. Mike DeWine at a news conference televised from Steubenville. With the announcement, the grand jury has completed its investigation, he said.

“We must treat rape and sexual assault as the serious crimes they are,” DeWine said. “When it is investigated everyone has the obligation to held find the truth,” he continued, “not hide, tamper or destroy the truth.”

Steubenville City Schools Supt. Michael McVey faces the most serious charges, including felony counts of obstructing justice, DeWine said. Telephone calls to the school official’s office and home were not immediately returned.

All the others face misdemeanor charges. Also charged were an elementary school principal and a coach who face misdemeanor charges of failing to report possible child abuse. A former volunteer coach faces several misdemeanor charges, including making false statements and contributing to a child's delinquency.

All four are to appear in court next month.

Shouldn't they all be former officials?

Isn't a long jail sentence the proper punishment for covering up a rape?

It’s called “teachers union”. Means you can get away with murder and keep your job.

This however means they will go to jail and teach inmates.

Read between the lines here: I’m familiar with the case and those involved on an educational level.

None of the people indicted are union members. They are either administrators, IT, or part time.

There were two others charged back in October. So that is six to date.

Here's a link to many FR threads going back to when this began if anyone is interested.

Hannah Rhinaman’s indictment is reported to have nothing to do with the rape and cover up. Her indictment is regarding stealing and selling school property.

Correct. But her father’s charges relate to the event.

I admit to a somewhat spotty grasp of the facts of the case beyond the basics of the central figures but I’m afraid that government and the legal system have contributed greatly to my cynicism over the years.

Mike DeWine was, as many here will recall, one of the Gang of 14 and a museum-grade RINO. He may be looking out for the victim’s best interests but he’s certainly no stranger to seeking the political limelight. The administrators may be guilty of one or more crimes but DeWine may very well be attempting to intimidate by going after the higher-ups.

I think he wants to run for a higher office and this will get him notoriety. That stated, there were so many coverup rumors that I’m glad he stepped in. Two examples:
1. The prosecutor’s kids are very good friends of the kids involved and her son was rumored to have been at one of the parties.
2. The sheriff is very good friends with the coach (who is a local god) and even employs him to motivate jailed youth. I’m pretty sure the coach does nothing in that capacity and just cashes the checks.
