Dog and cat of the year: Therapy pooch, rescued kitty (by US soldier in Afghanistan) take top honors

TODAY.com shared the story of Xena the Warrior Puppy with readers in April. After being rescued from extreme neglect, Xena transformed into a constant companion, friend and therapist for Jonny Hickey, an 8-year-old boy with autism.

The story of Cat of the Year Koshka began in southern Afghanistan. In 2010, the friendly stray caught the attention of Staff Sgt. Jesse Knott, who kept noticing troubling details: One day the kitten appeared to have been spray-painted, and another day some of his fur was shaved off and his skin was cut. Knott couldn’t take seeing the abuse, so he smuggled the furry friend onto his military base.

That poor dog was at death’s door. How wonderful to see him so loved.
And I shudder to think what abuse was being done to that cat.

There are some sick, twisted people in the world. But I am very glad some wonderful people rescued them.

Beautiful story! I am simply amazed that the one picture (I thought for sure the poor dog was dead) was the “before” picture. Not sure how the vets quite did it but kudos to them all.

A lake of fire awaits those who abuse animals like this...no pity here.

"thought for sure the poor dog was dead."

That's what I thought after seeing the picture too. Great job the vet team did with that dog.

God bless our troops too. Luv the pic of tough guy soldier with his rescued kitty. Too cute.
