I have an old, old version of MS Money and love i; it does everything I want it to for keeping track of my investments. But Microsoft stopped making Money a few years back, so that leaves one other big player in the space, Quickens software. However, when I read all of the review on Amazon it appears to be a nightmare for many people, especially those using Windows 8/8.1, which is what I am now using.
My version of MS Money barely worked on Vista; several times in fact it would not, making it fitful at best. I am concerned that although it is working at the present, it may crap out on 8.1 and am starting to look for alternatives, but there do not appear to be any good ones. What do people here use?
And note, I do not want to put my investment transactions on the net in an account, as that is one of the options.

“Best software for tracking investments”
Whatever the IRS uses?
They make software? I take it that was a tongue in cheek response.
we use MoneyDance - it’s not as good as MS Money, but it works.
bump place holder.
Thanks. I will check it out.
But it looks like you need Quicken!

Money Plus Sunset Deluxe is not supported on Windows 8.x
Excel.
Nothing else comes even close. Until you can write your own spreadsheet for tracking investments, you are at the mercy of some programmer who has the best interests of the company he works for at heart.
If you have your own best interests at heart, you should know how to write a spreadsheet that has what you want.
Heh... just got through with Quicken 2014... an “upgrade” for my previous version 2011. It was total crap... even with the R3 release... and now sits on the front porch waiting for UPS to pick up and send back to Amazon.
I installed the free “Sunset” version of MS Money and am now trucking along just fine.
I’m just curious. I never found Quicken to be good at tracking investments. However, it’s more than adequate for keeping track of my checking and savings accounts along with my credit card transactions.
I have two Excel spreadsheets to keep track of my investments. I have one spreadsheet to track shares bought / sold, dividends, etc. But I’m a long time investor and I don’t have many transactions in a year. The other spreadsheet is my important one. It tracks the monthly value of my investments so I know if we are on track with our retirement savings. Basically it’s a list of my checking, savings, and investment accounts (my Roth IRA, husband’s Roth IRA, our Fidelity account, my rollover IRA, my husband’s 401(k) account, etc.). I update it monthly and have formulas at the bottom of each monthly column to show the increase / decrease from last month, the increase / decrease from last year end, and the increase / decrease from 12 months ago (both $-wise and %-wise).
What, specifically, are your requirements? Are you tracking a number of investment accounts with numerous transactions? What information are you looking for your software to tell you?
I have a lot of transactions from stocks, not just buying and selling the stock itself, but also reinvesting the dividends. (mutual funds too) MS Money was nice because each time I had a gain I could specify whether I wanted LIFO or FIFO.
Have you checked out The American Association of Individual Investors (http://www.aaii.com/)? They’re a good resource for folks who manage their own investments. Some regions (like the Twin Cities, where I live) have very interesting meetings. Anyway, they have a review of some portfolio management software. Check it out: http://www.aaii.com/computerized-investing/article/2-the-top-portfolio-management-software.
Another good group of investors is http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/index.php. Check out their forums for investment software advice, or join them and ask for advice. They also have an active Twin Cities group.
