The worlds first 3D printed metal firearm, a classic 1911 design, has been successfully fired more than 600 times, according to Solid Concepts, a California-based 3D printing company.

Political power grows out of the nozzle of a 3-D Printer.
Diane Fienstein is deeply concerned.
Somewhere John Moses Browning is giggling like a schoolgirl. Who could possibly feel threatened by a 100-year-old firearms design? Ridiculous! Why, I haven’t seen one of those since...uh, well, since about 10 minutes ago.
Hang on I gotta go check and make sure mine is resting safely where it’s supposed to be.........................
Yup, sound asleep and not causing an issue. Awwww. They’re so cute when they’re sleeping.
This is pretty freakin’ awesome! Finally, some GOOD news.
Meanwhile, the ATF is in a complete panic. What happens to their carefully crafted gun control when you can 3D print what you want — no paperwork, either. Oh, dear. It doesn’t matter what kind of legislation or regulations they concoct, the technology has other commercial applications besides making forearms.
LOL! “forearms”? We talkin’ Popeye style forearms? I know, it’s late.
Not to mention how fast the price is coming down for one these units. Just a couple of years ago, it would have cost $30 grand for a 3-D printer. They can now be bought for $2,000.
Laws cannot stop innovation & guns are not going to vanish.
Look foward to more intense regulation of ammunition.
Yikes!
But look for similar machines to drop to 25k in 5 years or so.
In ten years a desktop assembler that can do this and also make the ammo will be 10k.
In 20 years the assembler will be 2k and will also make pharmaceuticals and biological materials.
This tech is coming of age and undergoing an accelerating capability growth combined with drops in prices....similar to computers in the last few decades.
I use tiny processors that cost less than 5 dollars that have more power than an old Cray2 supercomputer. The Cray clocked in at 824 MIPS. It's now a hunk-o-junk less capable than your smartphone. Expect similar expansion of capabilities and lowering of cost in 3D printing and desktop assemblers.
...maybe now the drug cartels can manufacture their own weapons and not pressure Holder anymore...I bet he’s glad to hear this news! (sarc/)
The problem isn't lack of ordinary firearms. Most of us can buy a firarms a lot cheaper than this metal sintering printer can make one. The problem is that the civilian population has no access to weaponry that can even the balance of power with police in their recycled APCs and MRAPS. I'd feel a lot safer if there were a couple of million of these spread around the civilian population.
Mine was manufactured in the Springfield Armory in 1914 - still a sweet/reliable/accurate weapon.
LOL! Ooops. Dang boating accidents.
Yes. This is true today. Won't be true soon enough.
Wonder what the price per gun is, when you make a hundred of them?
The problem is that the civilian population has no access to weaponry that can even the balance of power with police in their recycled APCs and MRAPS.
If they can make a 1911, I don't see any reason they couldn't make an M-16, or MP5.
I'd feel a lot safer if there were a couple of million of these spread around the civilian population.
So would many of us brother.
