Mesmerizing masonry.
Now show the government run version of masonry - He smashes the bricks into a pile dumps a ton of cement over it and demands $680 million for the job.
That man is an artiste, you can tell he’s laid down a lot of brick. There’s almost a meditative quality to this video.
My dad was a mason tender when I was growing up. He didn’t have many good things to say about masons. ha-ha
This is a cool video, though.
There is the deepest human pleasure and satisfaction in performing such highly skilled work. I was an electrician for a number of years (put myself through college and law school) and I still love to pick up the tools whenever I can. Nothing beats the tangible results of running pipe and wire, installing fixtures or other equipment, hooking it all up and flipping the switch. I see that in this video: the man is making something solid, useful, enduring. That’s who we celebrate on Labor Day, not union thugs, but good, hardworking people who produce things.
Those are block, not brick. There is an enormous difference. 12" block can weigh 35lbs. A brick can weigh as little as 3.
Mason = articulate manipulator of clay products. Yes, we are artists. :-)
It was delicate work to make smoke stacks. Any small error at the bottom and the whole thing would not be straight and collapse.

I have laid cinder blocks but not in California.
The guy in this video is good; I would hire him in a second. Not all masons can or do use the back of their trowel. I do.
That amazed me, watching him use both the front and back of the trowel depending on which side of the wall he was buttering.
That is a brick layer.

Ha. The first thing I thought was that his lower back has to be killing, being slightly stooped like that all day.
I had a neighbor who was a stone mason. He was laying sidewalks into his 80s.
There’s nothing like beautiful stone work. I love a good stone retaining wall.
I've done some beautiful stone work over the years. I'm a third-generation mason; my grandfather was a mason, he had 7 sons. My father was mason and he had six sons. We all did it at one time or another but I am the only one who still does.
