For more than 50 years, American women have cast off constrictive undergarments, which feminists have long criticized as symbols of repression. But for one Seattle resident, embracing the corset in the 21st century has been a tool of empowerment -- not oppression. For the last four years, 33-year-old Sarah Chrisman has not only worn a corset on a daily basis, she has also unabashedly embraced the 19th century, deciding to live a wholly Victorian-era lifestyle.

Nice posture in the first photo. Beats the grunge look prevalent in Seattle. She is the counter-culture.

Good for her. It’s rather sweet and countercultural. Plus, she’s not hurting a soul and her husband seems to be enjoying her immensely.

Corsets, if laced too tightly, can displace internal organs. They honestly can be a health hazard.

she has also unabashedly embraced the 19th century, deciding to live a wholly Victorian-era lifestyle. I have no problem with what they are doing and offer a hearty "good for them." On the other hand I think a couple of weeks in 1880's London would disillusion them of much of their Victorian romanticism.

Does the term “Victorian” apply to the US? Since her tastes in clothing and literature seem to be mostly from the 1880’s and 1890’s, I would say that she lives a postbellum lifestyle.

Corsets, if laced too tightly, can displace internal organs. They honestly can be a health hazard. I think corsets are covered on pages 1873 and 1946 in Obamacare, in addition to a few hundred pages of regulations derived from those pages.
