The NFL lost another great player too soon with the death of Todd Christensen on Wednesday.

Christensen died during morning surgery at a hospital in Utah. He was 57 years old. According to The Salt Lake Tribune he had battled liver disease and other serious illnesses in recent years. The former tight end was a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion. He was also a television sports analyst.

Christensen was a standout running back at BYU and a second-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 1978. He is best known for his time with the Oakland Raiders. Christensen started to emerge in 1982 with Oakland, when he had 42 receptions for 520 yards and four touchdowns in a strike-shortened season. In 1983 Christensen caught 92 passes for 1,247 yards and 12 touchdowns, and the Raiders won the Super Bowl at the end of that season.

Grew up watching him. Shocked to see him go so young. My God. RIP.

Drafted by the Cowboys who tried get him to switch to TE from FB and Todd balked, got a minor injury in camp, then released finally found success as TE as Raider. He came off as interesting as an analyst to me and definitely raised the bar in that capacity. RIP.

A sad day. I was hoping he would be able to light the torch at one of the Raiders home games. He turned average quarterbacks into world beaters.

Yes, my eyes. I was an athlete at the Div I level and you can tell who is and who isn’t. Trust me, I was surrounded with them. This wasn’t yesterday either, it was 30 years ago. What the public was so shocked about just ten years ago, my contemporaries knew twenty years before the rest of you.

To add, I knew guys juicing in the late 80’s at the semi-pro baseball level. What do you think they were doing at the higher levels. To be fair, in the NFL and NCAA back then they were taking steroids like it was M & M’s. I had frat brothers, football players, who had to lock themselves in their rooms on the weekends because they did not trust themselves to not kill someone in a roid rage. I s*** you not, one of them is now a judge in Massachusetts. You can make working out and lifting weights a career, but you will never look like these guys without a little shot in the ass.

I would say many of the top football players were using steroids as far back as the late 80s because I worked out with so many of them in the same gym in the off season in college. Even knew their suppliers because my workout buddy and best friend was a customer and quasi mktg asst. Mostly while being active in sigma nu he helped hook some the players up. I dont know about TC but plenty of these football players don’t get to their peculiar proportions and perform at unnatural levels naturally. Except maybe Hershel Walker.

Have you noticed that many pro football players never get old? They tend to die relatively young, just like many pro wrestlers. Why is that?

I remember when Dallas drafted Todd in 1978. He was a red hot fullback in the pre-season but got hurt and placed on IR, not playing at all that Super Bowl year. The next season Landry wanted him to play tight end but Todd balked. He eventually got cut. Then he bounced around the league and finally got signed by the Raiders.

After a few years as a nothing special special teamer, Christensen exploded in the limelight with the Raiders as, you got it... you a tight end--

Well, I was right, again... as usual--
