Paul Mantee, a burly, tough-guy actor who starred in the 1964 sci-fi cult classic Robinson Crusoe on Mars and on TV's Cagney & Lacey as Det. Al Corassa, has died. He was 82.
A longtime resident of Malibu who wrote columns for the local newspaper, Mantee played the health inspector on a 1994 episode of Seinfeld, "The Pie;" had a recurring role as Commander Clayton on Hunter, the police drama that starred Fred Dryer; and appeared as Cornell, a henchman for Catwoman who disguises himself as Batman to frame the Caped Crusader for a robbery in a 1967 storyline that saw the villainess go back to college.

Oh the huge Mantee!
Robinson Crusoe on Mars was one of my all time favorite movies.
RIP.
I can’t think of too many other “careers” that people can stitch together a living out of working a few hours a year.
Rest in peace
For a second I thought it said Paul McCartney. Gee, I guess “going veggie” ain’t good.
RIP.
Tom Cruise said he worked as hard as any soldier/Marine in Afghanistan...
Mine too. I did not realize it was made back in the 60’s.
One of my favorite movies, all time. Rate it with Enemy Mine for great remakes of old classic stories.
Always see him in old reruns of 60s shows like “The FBI” and such. Usually in rather minor, secondary roles. But, he was always a familiar face, and “Robinson Crusoe on Mars” gave him a touch of fame. It was a really nifty, endearing, little sci-fi film. Not as well-known as some others, but people who have seen it always have nice memories and opinions of it.
Saw that film as a young lad. Our local CBS TV affiliate pre-empted network programming on Election Night and ran this, as I guess it was easier to interrupt for election returns. (we had a member of the extended family running for a local office and had to keep it on all evening).
Don’t think I’ve seen that film since.
Ditto - Robinson Crusoe on Mars was a great movie!
Amen, and RIP. Loved that movie as a kid...had bad dreams about those cruciform alien spaceships!
A classic, seen it many times since...
RCOM really rates high as an iconic science fiction film. In the 1960s, there was about one or two really unforgettable films a year.
1960 The Time Machine
1961 Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
1962 -
1963 X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes
1964 First Men in the Moon; Robinson Crusoe on Mars
1965 Crack in the World; Planet of the Vampires
1966 Fahrenheit 451; Fantastic Voyage
1967 Quatermass and the Pit
1968 2001: A Space Odyssey; Barbarella; Planet of the Apes
1969 The Illustrated Man
Interesting tidbit that he played in the Batman TV series because Adam West was in R.C.O.M. too. I remember seeing that flick at the Capitol theater in Ashland,Ky. when it was first released.
