Meet the Muslim Ms. Marvel: Kamala Khan’s Fight Against Stereotypes
The Daily Beast ^ | Nov 8, 2013 | Rula Jebreal

Kamala Khan isn’t your average New Jersey teenager battling a cultural identity crisis. She has superpowers. And she’s here to smash the stereotype of young Muslim-American women.

Marvel has a comic book superhero named Kamala Khan, a Muslim teen from New Jersey. This idea is refreshing. It’s important. It reminds me of the late ‘60s film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. That was a revolutionary story about interracial marriage in America at a time when it was taboo. Like that film, Kamala will shatter taboos, too. Ms. Marvel (Kamala’s alter ego) will open the eyes of a new generation of comic book readers to the mostly unseen, unknown complexities of being a Muslim-American woman.

During the last decade, the media has sometimes portrayed Muslims as the villains. As someone said after 9/11 “The only good Muslims are dead Muslims.” Rightwing media outlets and political opinion-formers have sometimes played a delirious role in promoting—and giving platforms—to ex-Muslims who not only hate their former religion, but advocate a “war on Islam” as if it's a singular entity and as if a war on a religion is feasible or winnable. This poisoned public space is the background against which many young Muslims are growing up.

Only recently have we stopped ignoring the voices that have been risking their lives by demanding reforms in the Muslim world. It took brave people like Pakistan’s young Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban for advocating for girls education, and sacrificial leader Benazir Bhutto, who was educated in the West, went back to her country, covered her head in respect of her religion, and still said that religion should not be dominating politics.

Does Marvel Comics have (m)any characters who share their Christian faith within the pages of the comics these days?

Here was how Marvel Comics-Disney took to portraying the Tea Party movement a few years back.

Everything about race relations in the United States reminds liberals of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and has for the last forty years.

Did Marvel miss the part about no imagery depicting living beings in Mohammedanism?

Funny how leftwing media outlets and others continue to deny that the war was declared on the rest of us by Mohammadans. Pretending it doesn't exist won't make it go away.

If moslems don’t wish for themselves to be portrayed by negative stereotypes then perhaps they should stop reinforcing our perceptions of them by constantly living a life of negative stereotypes. Same goes for Trayvon types. Stereotypes exist for a reason.

Able to self-detonate in a single bound!

Problem is, it only works once.

Yes. Disney-Marvel can go sink in a swamp. Bill Clinton’s pal (who helped bribe Monica Lewinsky) almost tanked the entire comic book industry (by swallowing up a major distributor and strong arming stores into buying all Marvel inventory for maximum discount and promotions).

I though about buying their stock (because of the valuable assets) when they were around 12 cents a share but I figured that if they did go bankrupt, the shareholders would get screwed while the million dollar trademark characters were passed off to a friendly interest.

And my understanding is that even Stanly Lieber Lee got associated with Ms. Hillary Clinton’s corruptions in the late 1990s and may have even had to provide testimony.
