EL SOBRANTE (CBS SF) – A street in El Sobrante has reopened after fire crews and a hazardous materials team finished removing an estimated 2,000 used hypodermic needles that spilled onto the roadway early Tuesday morning.
The spill was reported just after 5 a.m. on Santa Rita Road near Appian Way.
Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews used brooms and shovels to pick up the needles and put them back in the container they appeared to have come from, Fire Marshal Lewis Broschard said.

Hey! Ain’t no thang sweetie. These needles was for normal ‘conditions’ and stuff.....no AIDS or HIV here. We’re all equal and we have rights. Just move along. The trash picker-upper go to them before our adopted children could get at them.
Is Contra Costa co. the same place where the town of Contra Costa is? Did they ever resolve the mystery of those 14 employees that walked off the job at that nursing home?
I’m in no position to criticize since my town of Everett WA has its share, more than its share, of social problems, but it would seem to be a troubled place. Or, that’s the impression people are getting from the media.
The town in question is Castro Valley, which is in the next county over (Alameda). El Sobrante and Castro Valley don't touch, but it's not too hard of a drive--traffic conditions permitting--between them. And I'm not sure of any very recent updates on that front yet.
