New Ligament Discovered In the Human Knee

Two knee surgeons at University Hospitals Leuven have discovered a previously unknown ligament in the human knee. This ligament appears to play an important role in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Despite a successful ACL repair surgery and rehabilitation, some patients with ACL-repaired knees continue to experience so-called 'pivot shift', or episodes where the knee 'gives way' during activity.

For the last four years, orthopedic surgeons Dr Steven Claes and Professor Dr Johan Bellemans have been conducting research into serious ACL injuries in an effort to find out why. Their starting point: an 1879 article by a French surgeon that postulated the existence of an additional ligament located on the anterior of the human knee. That postulation turned out to be correct:

Reminds me of an old saying an old engine builder used all the time.

“It ain’t what you know that blows’em up. It’s what you know that ain’t so.”

I’m certainly no doctor but that “ALL” doesnt look all that hard to spot. With all of the millions that have been performed you would think someone would have noticed a ligament that wasnt in their text books. it would be nice to read an explaination of how/why this was such a mystery.

“Some of the conclusions were recently published in the Journal of Anatomy. The Anatomical Society praised the research as “very refreshing” and commended the researchers for reminding the medical world that, despite the emergence of advanced technology, our knowledge of the basic anatomy of the human body is not yet exhaustive.”

Was thinking the SAME THING! That's a BIG ligament to overlook during anatomy classes. Wonder if they were just slicing through them all these years without realizing it?

Huh??! How can something inside the body not have been discovered till now? And we’re not talking about some infinitesimal gland or something. This is a tendon for God’s sake. Is it extremely tiny or something?

I might add that there are "unknown knowns." This is damn near anything obama utters during his waking hours.

It was not anything medical but years ago - back in 1974 - I was taking a Drafting and Design course at the Tech Center. This technical school taught kids trades - motor repair, sheeting metal, beautician, drafting, etc - for kids that were not going on to college. In the first month of the drafting class, we were doing simple drawings - front, top, side. In the text was some kind of widget device with multiple shapes. It showed how the front, top, side was suppose to look. As I looked at the drawing, I noticed that it was not correct and informed the instructor. He looked at it and surprise, surprise - I was right.

Point being - sometimes people can look or work on something for years and years, and never see what is right in front of them.
