Kentucky cross-country runner refuses to race after being assigned number 666

A Kentucky high school student athlete declined to participate in her team’s cross-country race after she was assigned the number 666, saying it would have gone against her religious beliefs.

Whitley County High School junior Codie Thacker and her coach tried to get her a different number, but race officials denied the request.

Coach Gina Croley knew there might be a problem as soon as she saw the number Thacker had been given. "I saw it and I was like, 'whoa,'" she said. "I don't think she will wear that number."

The number 666 is often associated with the biblical "mark of the beast."

Thacker was looking forward to running, but her high expectations quickly gave way to disappointment. "I've trained since June for this race," Thacker said. “I was so nervous I thought about it all week.”

A Kentucky High School Athletic Association spokesperson said that race officials would have granted Thacker’s request had they been made aware it was for religious reasons.

"I told them to mark out my name because it makes me sick just thinking that my name is associated with that number," Thacker said. "I didn't want to risk my relationship with God and try to take that number.”

A literal follow-on to the Old Testament would assert what you have asserted.

The New Testament is much freer. It is voluntary, not legalistic, and as the Holy Spirit prompts. Money is a handy medium for giving back to the Lord, but there are other mediums such as service or miscellaneous chattels.

I look askance at legalism. It can result in giving too little a blessing rather than too much.

PS - They still have a 13th floor, no matter what integer they assign to it.

If the DMV wanted to bestow upon me a license plate with 666 on it i would refuse it and get in the back of the line.

If they still refuse then just before the race she should flip it into # 999. Herman Cain would be proud.

Sure they would.

Just what did these idiots think her reason was?

Good for her... obviously she was not interested in being an advert for Obamacare.

What a bunch of mindless superstition.

Does she think she’ll reach the pearly gates and be denied because of a number she wore for track?

my insurance co sent me a bill for that amount once and I insisted I pay a dollar more and I told them why

Over 30 years ago I was a cashier at Target, and was ringing up a customer; when the bill came up for $6.66 she turned white as sheet and ran away.

Seemed like a bit of an extreme reaction, to say the least!

I agree with you there. I'm a fan of conservative theologians but they often have a legalistic tendency. Sometimes, there is a fine line between obedience and legalism.
