Brad Ausmus has never managed in the minors or the majors. In his first year on the job, he will manage a team that is among the favorites to win the World Series.

The Tigers will hire Ausmus to replace Jim Leyland as manager, according to multiple reports. Adam Spolane of SportsRadio 610 appears to be the first to report the news. It was later confirmed by Ken Rosenthal of Foxsports.com.

Text messages sent to Ausmus and the Tigers late Saturday night were not immediately returned. Reports indicate that he will fly to Detroit on Sunday to finalize the deal.

Ausmus, a 44-year-old former Tigers catcher, interviewed with the Tigers on Monday. He has been working as a special assistant for the San Diego Padres.

"I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with Dave and his staff," Ausmus told MLive.com via text message at the time. "I enjoyed the discussion and thought it went well."

Ausmus managed Team Israel in the qualifying tournament for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Ausmus interviewed earlier this month to be manager of the Washington Nationals, but the Nationals settled on Matt Williams instead.

Ausmus played three of his 18 seasons in the majors with the Tigers. He won three Gold Gloves in his career and was an All-Star for the Tigers in 1999.

The Tigers are certain to be favored to win the American League Central Division for a fourth consecutive season in 2014. They reached the American League Championship Series in each of the past three seasons and played in the World Series in 2012.
Another white manager? Paging Sharpton and Jackson. :-)
Gene Lamont and Tod Jones will be staying with the Tigers as bench and pitching coaches.
Lloyd McClendon: Loss for DET.
“Red Sox appear ready to part ways with Catcher Jarrod, Salt of La macchia”
I don’t get BOS’s alleged fascination with Brian McCann, although Saltwater lost his job during the WS.
If I was a GM, I’d stay away from any deals longer than 4 years.
Cubs choose Padres Bench Coach Rick Renteria as their new Manager. He was a minor leauge Manager for the Marlins organization under Dave Dombrowski and managed Mexico in the WBC earlier this year.
Red Sox refused them permission to interview their bench coach, Torey Lovullo.
“Cubs choose Padres Bench Coach Rick Renteria”
Seems like a solid choice.
“Red Sox refused them permission to interview their bench coach, Torey Lovullo.”
Supposedly, there is an agreement in place that Epstein can’t raid BOS’s personnel for 3 years. Part of the deal for letting him go to CHC.

Lovullo wasn't on the Red Sox staff when that agreement was made. Thus, it's arguable whether he's covered by it.
There seems to be bad blood over that Epstein deal.
Yes, but it’s worked out better for BOS.
Plus, they won’t be able to hold onto Lovullo forever.
Well, they didn’t let him interview and CHC hired someone else, so it’s a moot point.
I think that with Cherrington, we got the better of the two..
And I still wonder what would have happened if Billy Beane had accepted Henry's offer to be the GM
yeah, so the Cubs hire a guy who has never managed before . ((sigh))
At the major league level, no. But in the Minors and the Mexican national team, yes.
The leftover guys with Major League managerial experience sound like a bench of losers. Who do you want, Ozzie? He’s the best of the lot. Wedge? Acta (barf)?
Campaignpete r-ct, blew off his interview with Theo to campaign in local elections.
More Cubs News, the team exercised an option to ditch their contract with WGN after next year. They want higher fees or else will explore other options for the 70 or so games they air on WGN annually.
“Epstein got the $$$$$, but he made a terrible career choice..”
Pretty much.
I agree; I think Cherrington, is the better of the two. Dan Duquette never got the credit he deserved, especially for assembling the 2003/4 teams. 2007 was Epstein’s, ok.
“And I still wonder what would have happened if Billy Beane had accepted Henry’s offer to be the GM”
Supposedly he did for a few hours but changed his mind. Everytime I watch “Moneyball” and they have that scene of Henry and Beane I wonder. OTOH, BOS has done pretty well without Beane.
“The leftover guys with Major League managerial experience sound like a bench of losers.”
Yep, you’re right.
Interesting item about CHC and WGN...they’ve been together for forever. Hmmm.
