CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
Vanity | 10 26 2013 | Dick Bachert

Posted on 10/26/2013 4:28:06 PM PDT by Dick Bachert

The recently released film “Captain Phillips” is getting good reviews and a respectable box office. It is a film I won't be viewing. My reasons?

Tom Hanks is a talented actor (that's someone who can memorize at least one paragraph of dialog written by another).

Unfortunately, he is also another Hollywood Obama worshiper, albeit a relatively quiet one, who, along with Spielberg and several others, grasp the financial rewards for positive portrayals of the United States military. Projects such as "Saving Private Ryan", "Band of Brothers" and now this new one.

How sadly hypocritical that these Hollywood types continue to support politicians out here in the real world like the Clintons, Obama, most of the radical left crew from the Left Coast (Algore, Pelosi, Waxman, Boxer, Feinstein, George Miller, etc.) who, at their cores, disdain those same military men and women upon whose backs and lives these creatures profit.

It's just me but I've decided to consciously AVOID the films and other projects put forth by these folks.

I hear ya’.

That said, isn’t patronizing these people akin to consorting with the enemy?

My wife is not a conservative, but she isn’t a liberal either. She is, to a degree, apolitical in that she follows events but not the political machinery that accompany those events.

She understands how I feel about these things, and while I wish she felt the same way in some areas as I do, I can’t help feeling grateful to her for giving me room to have my beliefs, listening to me when I get on a roll, and trying her best to accommodate me. She has always been one to buy whatever is on sale, but she knows how I feel, so she shops a little harder to find other things I will like.

I appreciate that.

As chock full of libs as “Saving Private Ryan” was I’m glad it was made and I’m glad that I saw it and will continue to watch it over time. The message was bigger than the individual parts that comprised it.

Hell of a movie. Same goes for “Apollo 13.”

I would go see some of these films if they pay me enough. I am not greedy-——I’ll go to see Captain Phillips for 40 dollars per minute of my time.

Two hours at 40 bucks per should get me a nice battle rifle or two :)

Wifey wanted to see the movie and for me to go along, and since she is the only friend I have left :-), I went. My dad was in the Merchant service before WWII and I was brought up on lots of wild tales. Also, I am ex-Navy and was interested in story as well as the internals of a modern merchantman.

Thought the guys who played the Somalis were great - they ably played a bunch of unstable guys. Got a kick when the leader, I believe, said he wanted to come to America. Both wife and I thought, “All he has to do is hook up with some Catholic Church and they’ll bring him over to Lewiston, Maine, etc., put him on the welfare rolls and he will live a life of comparative luxury.”

I started having problems as soon as the outboard-powered skiff closed in on the ship:
1) The ship’s only defensive measure was a series of rail-mounted high-pressure hoses around the ship that proved useless. I wondered how much that cost to install, compared to hiring one mercenary sharpshooter with a Barrett, or even a 30-06. All four pirates could have been taken out as they cruised alongside, looking for a gap in the spray from the hoses. If one was more merciful, the shots could have gone into the outboard and left them to drift. Or, said mercenary with an RPG or rifle grenade could have done the job quicker. We’re talking less than 100 yards range here.

2) As the pirates came alongside and tried to hook the boarding ladder, lean over and drop a grenade. Granted, these guys had AK47s, but I think that could have been done in the confusion.

3) Near the end, I was stunned at all the US assets involved: one destroyer, one frigate, one amphibious assault ship, and one team of seals parachuting from a P-3 Orion. (Impressive that they were able to duplicate this for the movie - at what cost?) All I could think of was “All this to nail four guys, when 1) and 2) could have been employed.”

Gotta say it was well-acted, and had some really tense moments - again, hats off to the guys who played the Somalis.

When that hijacking took place, many of the port cities around the world had laws prohibiting visiting vessels from bringing in ANY weapons. Stupid, I know. The more unstable regimes feared such weapons would wind up in the hands of their opponents.

And the shipping companies had liability concerns should two crewmen face off and had weapons available.

I think that many nations and carriers have loosened up and many ships now carry firearms for certain senior members of the crew if their route takes them through known pirate infested waters. Some vessels are deploying powerful long range sonic weapons some of which are very effective in convincing the bad guys to go away.

That said, my personal favorites would be either a well zeroed Barrett or the trusty Mi Garand.

Phillips was hundreds of miles away from Somalia.

I smell sour grapes.

Their lawyers smell a new yacht.

Indeed. “Gravity” was merely a special effects vehicle to showcase Sandra Bullock’s “acting” abilities for an Oscar nomination.

What a waste.

Avatar was lightweight in all regards except special effects.

As with you, I look for good; plot, script, and acting. Special effects, cinematography, and soundtrack can then provide the support to create a great movie.

Loved “The Count of Monte Cristo” movie version you linked. Increasingly rare for Hollywood to produce that fine a work.

Strange that you would say that....I just read that one of my favorite( true story) book is being made into a movie... Unbroken..by Laura Hillenbrand

I don't see how they could possibly screw that up. Great true story. And LZ is still alive.

Knock yourself out FAA. Personally, I can’t suspend disbelief enough to watch these American hating, Hollyweird hypocrites. They make these movies because they know people will buy tickets, NOT because they are patriots, oh, and the money you give them is just used against you in every election. Call me nuts but I choose not to fund my enemy, in as much as possible.
