At a yoga studio in Washington recently, practitioners breathed, bent, twisted and stretched their way to a happier state. They left more relaxed, more energized, with better posture and a renewed outlook. But there was one curious thing: Of the 24 people in the room, only four were men.
Studio owners and teachers say that this disparity is not unusual, no matter the time of day. Typically, they say, the ratio of women to men rarely goes much below 80-20. In fact, a 2012 survey by Yoga Journal found that of the 20.4 million people who practice yoga in the United States, only 18 percent of them are men.
Why dont men do yoga?
My husband said he felt bored, said Praneetha Akula, a 36-year-old Silver Spring, Maryland, resident who was visiting the studio on a day off. He didnt let himself enjoy it. Akula is like many women who do yoga and want their spouse or partner to give it a try. But the many myths about yoga stand in their way: Yoga isnt a decent workout; its too touchy-feely; you have to be flexible to do it; mens bodies just arent built for pretzellike poses.
Adrian Hummell has heard all the excuses.
What happens is, a guy who doesnt know about it, he associates it with things like Pilates or aerobics, and they think of it as a chick workout, said Hummell, who has been doing yoga for the past three years and now teaches Bikram yoga, a particularly strenuous form of the practice, in Bethesda, Maryland
Its almost a joke when guys say, I dont think I should do yoga because Im not flexible, he said. Its like saying, Im too weak, so I cant lift weights.

Women More Interested in Yoga Than Man
Okay, but men are more interested in women doing yoga. And I’m not sure the title implies the same as the body of the article.
I read this entirely wrong. I was imagining it ended up with women marrying their yoga mats.
D-U-H.
The four men are all gay.
Or they stood in the back enjoying the view, imagining how much better the pole yoga class would be.
Probably only 2 of them are. The other 2 like looking at women wearing tight yoga pants.
I like yoga...56 yo man. My wife hates it.
Real men chop wood.
And more men race cars than women. Why does this surprise anyone?
Yoga started as a form of warrior conditioning in India, for men. If it’s done right, yoga will Kick. Your. Ass. However, most “western” yoga is lots of new-agey, crystals-and-incense and faux spirituality wrapped around the exercises, which will turn any male looking for a good workout completely off. It’s not the exercise itself that men aren’t interested in, it’s the trappings the west has hung on it, as though it had some deep spiritual meaning (it doesn’t).
That is how India conquered England and made it colony, the English man was no match for the yoga warrior.
What's that? The title is not a misprint? ... Oh ... OK ... I'm still going all in: The little green guy is up to his eyeballs in it. And he's very flexible, too, from what I hear.
balance exercise is fine. power90x has great yoga.
i just don’t want to be taught by hippie faggot types.
SAME HERE
...and when done splitting, feel free to haul it to the woodshed and stack it. Part of the job...
I would question the sexual orientation of any man interested in yoga!
I like to do yoga. It makes you limber and relaxed.
The other exercise gives me a headache.
