Do we know how bad HealthCare.gov really is yet?

For the past two and a half weeks – sadly partially silenced by the government shutdown and debt ceiling drama – Obamacare as an information system has been melting down since enrollment in the “exchanges” or “marketplaces” for health insurance went live at the HealthCare.gov website on October 1, 2013. It’s clear that the situation is bad, and is starting to alarm even the most forgiving to the President and his policies, as liberal Statist sites like The Huffington Post publish articles with titles like “Obamacare Website Failure Threatens Health Coverage for Millions of Americans”.

The actual file name of that post is simply delicious: “obamacare-train-wreck_n_4118041.html”.

We’re starting to see lots of material being published about how HealthCare.gov came into being, and either baffled disappointment or a sense of “what else did you expect?” at how a web application project that as much as $634 million has been spent on can’t handle user loads, deliver simple web pages, or manage to correctly display drop-down list box contents, much less enroll millions of uninsured Americans for soon-to-be-universally-mandated health coverage.

It’s also been reported that of the people who have managed to actually not have HealthCare.gov error on them and get themselves enrolled that incorrect information has been passed to the insurers via the government’s website and that possible compromises of personal information (leaving enrollees vulnerable to identity theft) have both occurred.

9 He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.
11 “From the time that the daily sacrificeis abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.

The website is just the part of the abysmal failure of Obamacare that people see: it’s the tip of the iceberg. The underlying law is the real failure, and people haven’t seen that yet. When they do, Katy bar the door!

“How can they do that when you are not living there?
I have no US accounts of any kind.”

If you are a US citizen abroad you are still liable for US income taxes if your income is above a certain level.

The level is generous - sort of - but not unreachable for many professionals and does not take into account the cost of living in the place you reside. Whether you owe taxes or not you are required to fill out the forms and you are REQUIRED to provide all bank account numbers in non-US banks. If you have a non-US citizen spouse this becomes very, very problematic.

If you have been living abroad and submitted tax forms for several years I would talk to an accountant. I’d do this even if you have a very modest income.

It gets worse: The US is also the only nation I know of that “Reserves” the right to tax you for income earned up to ten years after you have become a citizen somewhere else.

When you give up your US passport you have to swear before a US diplomat that you are not leaving the US for tax reasons.

Remember the guy Clinton pardoned Marc Rich? A lot of his tax issues were related to the fact that he lived in Switzerland, had changed his nationality to Swiss and stopped paying income tax to the US. The government claimed that he had changed his nationality simply to avoid US taxes and that is not allowed. Pardoning him was one of only two things Clinton ever did I agreed with. Indeed, Clinton could have redeemed his whole presidency as far as I am concerned by overturn this rule and making Congress vote on it. If the Obamanation of Desolation came out in support of aligning the US with other nations and taxing based upon location rather than mere citizenship he’d get my vote for a third term if he wanted it. US tax laws are manefestly unjust to ex-pats

Well, I think you have me confused with some rich tycoon that has dual residences, going back and forth.
I have not been in the US since 2004. I did start social security while living in Europe, and had direct deposit into my European bank bank. It is now into my Philippine bank.
I have never had one word from the IRS, and I do not know any expats that have. We get only a dead or alive letter from SS once every few years.
My income is so low, I would not be a blip on their screen.
The best part is that I live a nice life on next to nothing

I do not encourage people to leave the US

The world has changed to the point that there's no longer a need to pick just one place to have a house, work, shop, visit family, and see a doctor.  These days communication and transportation is so cheap we can do each of those things in places that are hundreds if not thousands of miles apart.

imho working and shopping is the US is great and seeing a doctor and a dentist in Latin America is best.

Suppose we’ll find out on Nov 15 if the 1335 is 1290 + 45, and/or another lengthy timeline. Well whatever it is, “happy is he who waits”... (and manages to ride it all out). :-/
