A 280,000% Mark Up For... Water? A Look Inside The Bottled Water Industry
ZeroHedge.com ^ | July 29, 2013 | Tyler Durden

Posted on 10/20/2013 3:54:23 PM PDT by SamAdams76

Imagine there was a time when bottled water didn't exist in our catalog of popular commodities. Perhaps the trend started in 1976 when the chic French sparkling water, Perrier made its introduction. There it was seductively bottled in its emerald green glass amongst the era of disco and the spectacle of excesses... who could resist right?! What could be more decadent than to package, sell and consume what most consider (in the western world) a common human right easily supplied through a home faucet! It’s absurd that the cost of designer water is at a "280,000% markup" to your tap water and it's reaching record heights in consumption....

I’ve went diving in several springs. Water tasted good coming out of the ground.

We put a whole house filter in and a reverse osmosis filter for drinking and ice.

“Here in Tampa they lose roughly 10% of the water to leaks in the pipes. What gets in through those holes?”

Probably nothing, unless there’s a main break, and de-pressurization. The water leaking out is under pressure, and won’t allow anything to leak in.

Sure in theory or a lab. Now throw in random chance, varying water pressure, thousands and thousands of holes of varying types sizes and locations.

Of course there is the chlorine to kill it and the dilution to keep people from getting sick.

Memphis has some of the best water in the country. I never realized how good we had it, till my parents moved to Florida.

Nasty stuff that is down there. I used to hate to even shower in it,

Yeah. Not unreasonable points. Still, if the water leaking out is under pressure, nothing will leak in. And,,,, I don’t like Florida water! The company I operate has for deep Ohio wells. Great water!

I used to live in Evart Michigan where they bottle Mountain Spring. It used to crack me up to see people buying it at the store when they had it at home for free.

Tap water in California is putrid. Yet it appears some Conservatives would like to keep us from buying something we want to buy cuz it’s GOOD!

Much of CA is putrid. But I know of NO Conservative who is trying to “KEEP YOU” from buying anything legal that you want to buy! Most of us just marvel at how much money you waste on silly things.

I can't afford Perrier anymore either but for a long time I would keep a bottle beside my bed because it was the only thing that would clear my throat when I woke up coughing in the night.

Now I drink a bottle of carbonated water made from my soda stream with lemon extract. It is close. Not quite there but close enough for government work.

Articles like this have been coming out for 30 years. People still want to buy bottled water.

Nothing wrong with making money selling to people something that they want to buy. At a price they are willing to pay.

My frig has a built in filter that gets 92%+ of all organic chemicals, including the chlorine. Makes our less than tasty city water taste great. I fill my washable sport bottle every time I go out in the car.

Bottled water does have its uses, but I do not care for its plastic taste and use it only when expediency necessitates.

We have iron in our well water. Untreated it has that wonderful sulfur taste and smell. We put in an iron filter which completely gets rid of the sulfur but the water has a tad of a tang to it. I don’t mind it. Mrs NHD doesn’t especially like it. A simple filter on the tap might help but haven’t tried it yet. But, the water is wonderfully soft.

You seem to be having an over-the-top emotional hissy fit. You have an irrational hatred of CA ... a state my dad’s family has lived in since the mid-1800’s All farmers, my dad, his 8 brothers and two aunts who were nuns. All life-long conservatives. I know you would hate us given your off the hook uncalled for fear.

Free Republic is also in the state you hate. I notice people who hate CA never list their home state, Chicken much?

Bottled water here is very cheap. My favorite is Arrowhead. Almost all stores have it on sale at around $2.40 for 24 bottles. If you spend some time you can really get the price down though if you look for store brands. It beats drinking tap water which varies from neighborhood to neighborhood.

I can vouch for the Brita water filter. It’s a jug with a $10 filter available everywhere including grocery stores.

Otherwise, I agree; it’s pretty dumb to drink bottled water unless you’re really stuck somewhere where there’s nothing else that’s safe to drink.

I agree. My siblings suck down bottles of very expensive water like there's no tomorrow. After hosting the annual nuclear family reunion, I find half-empty bottles of water around the house for days.

Isn't it fascinating what consumers choose to spend their money on?

I was highly amused yesterday to see an ad in the Washington DC metro for a smart phone app which will guide you to one of the 500 places in the DC metro area where you can fill your water bottle for free. What an awesome concept!
