Two Mount Olive physical education teachers have lost their jobs and been stripped of their tenure following racial remarks the two made about African-American students last year, according to the state education commissioner.

Two Mount Olive teachers were brought up on administrative charges last year after they allegedly made derogatory racial comments about African-American students. File photo

Brigitte Geiger and Sharon Jones were brought up on six administrative charges by Larrie Reynolds, the superintendent, on March 23, 2012 for unbecoming conduct and other charges based on a conversation they had in the locker room on March 2, 2012 that was overheard by two students, according to the Office of Administrative Law records.

“”Negro” instead of “nigra.””
_____________________________________________
My grandparents from Atlanta always referred to them as “nigras”. It was not derogatory.
I grew up in Memphis from the 40s. They were called “colored”.
Public signage used “colored”, and it was the term that my family used.

Quite possibly.

I've been here too long to believe the mods would do that to me.

I wonder what the National Association for the Advancement of COLORED People have to say about this.

I often correct the students I hear in the hallways of my school calling each other “nigger,” by saying, “Excuse me, you mean negro, don’t you?”

yeah I understand. The language changes over the years are hard to keep up with. What offends one today will be okay tomorrow or grounds for lynching

I happen to be part of that ‘older folks’ generation and I can not think of anyone save Walter Williams who consistently uses ‘Negro’.

I don’t disagree. That’s why I said the outcome was outrageous

Well, I do hear it a bit but tend to ignore it depending upon the age of the individual as you should when it means no dis-respect but reflects the times.

This is a problem with some in the liberal world. They try to pen negative thoughts on those that still use the language of the past. Seems that you also are trying to tie that to current day conversations.

Sorry to hear that if you don’t hear that it must be a problem with the rest of the world. That is what came across with your statement.

Since when is calling a negro a negro considered derogatory? Who makes up these rules?

I someone calls me a caucasian, should I be offended and demand they be disciplined?

Here’s a solution for the confused: instead of saying ‘Negroes’, start saying ‘Notnegroes’. They can’t get you for that.

Lesbians, lesbians, lesbians.

Not that there's anything more wrong about saying that than "negroes".

Absolute imbecility.

I googled it:

“Negros Occidental

Negros Occidental is a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Bacolod City and it occupies the northwestern half of Negros Island; Negros Oriental is at the southeastern half.”

I remember as a kid in the 1960’s my mother saying that she had just advised her elderly aunt not to call them (he Spanish word for black) anymore. Her aunt, born in Victorian times, was confused and innocently asked if she should call them (a word that was opposite of lighties). She clearly never considered that word offensive at all. So much for educating a previous generation!
